Hey I'm looking to buy a good suit or two and some shirts. Where would be the best place to look? I was thinking Arnotts? Does anybody know what kind of suits and shirts they would have in Brown Thomas and what prices they are? I'd be willing to spend a good bit to find the best quality and something that will last me years.

Hi, I think Brown thomas are great for suits in terms
    of trends and fitting.
    http://www.brownthomas.com/FASHION/STYLEGUIDE/MENSWEAR/tabid/248/Default.aspx

Arnotts shirts are generally between €40-€80 and are available in all colours.

My boyfriend buys his suits here and likes the quality and tailoring
excellent. He finds they are worth the money as you would get years of wear from them.

I think my boyfriend spent €400-€600, I'm sure you
could get them cheaper. Try this thread

They were worth the money for college balls, weddings etc.
The staff were really helpful and they did tailor everything
    so the fit was great.

Some of the Hong Kong tailors who come to Dublin are very good, but you have to be prepared to haggle.

Where would I find these? Actually where would I find tailors in general? And what kind of prices would you be looking for?

try the kildare outlet village, very good pricing on quality suits and shirts.
Got my self a nice suit there last year for 200.

You could always go to capel street and try louis copeland, would think more expensive though

Forget BT. Rip off prices that are entirely unjustified. Penneys do a good range of suits these days. I think cedarwood state is the label they stock.

For quality ready-to-wear suits try Hugo Boss in Dundrum shopping centre.

OP, a tailor made (bespoke) suit is going to set you back €800 - €1000. Most well knows tailor for a bespoke suit around Dublin is Louis Copeland.

Made to measure can be cheaper. Buy a suit off the rail and and get it altered to your measuremnts. Costs are based on the rail you choose from. If you pick up a Hugo Boss you'll only be paying half of an Armani price and so on. There are lots of good suit alteration places around.

Personally, if I'm going this route I'll never buy a designer label as they CAN be a bit miserly with their fabric making the alteration a bit hit&miss. Get a good quality suit with plenty of cloth for the alterator to work with for the best results.

If you are lucky enough to be the perfect avarage size then the world is your oyster and you can just pick straight from the rail.
Learn how a suit is ment to fit. Learn were a well fitted suit sleeve should reach. Learn how long the leg of a trouser should be. Then try the rails. Be sure that anything you buy for alteration fits across the shoulders because that can't be altered.

Shirts. Yummy yummy shirts. T.M.Lewins are having a sale at the moment. Also check out Thomas Pink. Go and get your neck measured. Then try the stock shirts to decide how long your want your sleeve and if you want the slim-fil, or regular fit. When you know those 3 things it's a simple case of picking waht appeals to you.

Don't ruin a good suit with cheap accessories. A tie will cost you €50.00. Cufflinks will cost you 50.00. Shoes will cost you €100. Match your belt to your shoes.

There are lots of beautiful suits out there, something for every taste. A week or two or learning what you like and what you want will make the whole proscess of choosing a lot easier. Do a little reading up on the subject. This link is a great primer and will give you all the basic information.

Remember, you CAN get booted&suited for under €300 but it takes effort and luck.

Aside from bespoke suits, the best imo is Hugo Boss. The fit is superior and looks like it was made for you.

Also if something is too long etc, always get a seamstress/tailor to fix it. For €15 you'll make that suit look perfect instead of sloppy.

Have been buying suits for years....

I now get them tailored which is by far the best and well worth it...you will then notice how nasty and cheap off the peg suits are in comparison...for your budget I am not sure...all I can say is....Stay away from Hugo Boss and Gieves & Hawkes...they were by far the worst suits I ever bought and over priced to boot...

I will second the above re cheap nasty accessories...dont ruin a bespoke suit for €1,000.00 by going into Dunnes to buy a nasty shirt or Clarkes for cheap rubber soled shoes

The accessories i.e. shoes, belt, shirts, ties etc etc can cost just as much as the suit...

+1. Designer label does NOT always equal quality.

Can any of you guys recommend a tailor in Dublin? I'm very tall and slim and want a classic two piece, two button suit that has a closer fitting than is probably traditional. So I know what I want but am wondering do certain tailors specialise in certain styles or can they all do everything? I've looked around but I'll need a bespoke suit as there isn't enough (extra) leg length in any of the suits I've tried on that I like.

Where can you get a bespoke suit for €800-1000 in Dublin Fairly sure you can't. Louis Copeland does not do bespoke suits either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 118 ✭✭surfjunky

@billy Louis Copeland does do bespoke suits, I was in with them yesterday and they can sort you out but you are talking upwards of a grand. I'm just wondering if anybody else can recommend other tailors that will do a bespoke suit and how they got on with it (price, happy with results, advice etc)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 925 ✭✭✭billybigunz

They have no mention of it on their website. They do off the rail alterations and a bit of made to measure. Bespoke suits start from about 3k.

  • Registered Users Posts: 118 ✭✭surfjunky

@ billy, my bad, I wasn't clearly distinguishing between bespoke and made-to-measure; after a quick google I'm now up to speed on what each means! I suppose I'd probably be looking in the made-to-measure bracket as my price range is similar to the one you're looking at, just have to wait for the recommendations to flood in now!

If you want value and quality then Bertoni suits are spot on. The have a great fit, you don't look 50 years old in them and retail for about €250.

@Waco I have two Bertoni suits and while I like their cut, to be honest the weight of the material isn't great and I'm looking for something a bit more special for my upcoming wedding. Also was just in Bertoni yesterday and their stock seems to have gone downhill (very few of the suits they stock are Bertoni, and dont have as much of the long leg, slim cut I'd be after that they usually stock); fyi if you do like their stuff their new season is now in, they'll be launching on Thursday (tomorrow) with 20% off. So I'm still on the look out for recommendations for made-to-measure place or tailor. Like Billyb my price range would be just under a grand.

Sorry didn't read full thread :o

They do great for work but not for a wedding, agreed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,637 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

Copeland were offering a deal on a half canvas suit for €850 a few months ago. Bargan at the time. They might still have the offer on if you ask them. Haggle with them.

Forgot to mention that perhaps you only need the trousers bespoke and a jacket altered. Might cut the price as the majority of cost in a bespoke suit is in making the jacket. A blazer and trousers might work out better then an ill-fitting suit.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I really wanted to correct some comments.

You can get a bespoke 2-piece suit in Ireland for E850-E900, fully canvassed. Louis Copeland do do bespoke if you go into the Capel St. branch and ask. But I've no idea what they charge.

There are several other tailors in Ireland and Dublin that do a half-canvassed bespoke suit as well.

There are plenty of places that do bespoke suits and Louis Copeland do for a fact.

Also, Suitable Company on Drury St do bespoke suits

Brown Thomas a good shout too. Not sure about bespoke, but they do offer good suits in there

Suitable Company offer a made-to-measure service in combination with Italian factories.

For Irish bespoke we should confine the term to a pattern cut for the client and a full range of cloth and style options, and the garment should be made on the island.
