Changing Oil heating system?

    Hi All,

First off, if this has been posted elsewhere please let me know. Did a quick search but couldnt find anything.

I live in a teraced 3 bed house with oil heating that was there when we bought 3 years ago. The house was was in need of severe modernisation which we did for 6 months. We had a plumber replace the majority of the pipes.

One thing we didnt do is replace the oil burner outside the house. The burner is in fairly bad condition and is almost flush to the wall at the back of the house. When we bought the house there was 'chimney' running from the burner right up to the roof of the house which we removed (it looked terrible) and replaced with a smaller one. But since we replaced there is now black soot running up the house streching for about 2 metres. If we open a back window while the heating is on the smell of burning oil is very strong throughout the house.

It didnt bother me for a long time (dont open the windows!) but now we are expecting our first child and I am concerned about raising the child with such a dirty heating system. We spoke about moving the burner, switch to gas heating or reinstalling the original 2 storey chimney.

So any thoughts or opinions? Anyone know the costs or work involved in switching to gas?

TL;DR - Need to change our oil heating system. Suggestions?

It sounds like the burner is not set up properly or needs a good service. It should not leave sooty deposits like that. I would get a service and a combustion analysis (should be part of the service) with a flue gas analyser.
The flue should also be located a suitible distance from any openable windows.

sounds like the chimney you put in to replace it isn't big enough to allow the fumes to escape, its then backing up back down at the burner causing it to smoke and this type of thing will happen quicker to an older boiler unit, what size of flue did you have before and how small is it now ???
