I was in Jack Jordans earlier, and noticed that someone had placed a form on the counter asking for name suggestions for the new primary school in Doughiska (to cover Doughiska and Roscam).

So, what ideas do people have here?

The school opens as a set of temporary buildings at the back of Tur Uisce in September, and afaik, will be non-denominational.

Two names already suggested are Saint Martins (Scoil Martin), and Merlin Woods Primary School.

I think the school has been placed under Catholic patronage (a scandal IMO).

Merlin Woods NS or just Doughiska NS would make sense.

Them forms are a bit out of date: the name Merlin Woods (national? primary? ... I can't remember which) has already been announced.

The rumours I hear are that the VEC wasn't ready to get it up and running fast enough, and Educate Together declined a site on that side of town a few years back. The Catholics were willing to get it started now, but the plan is that they don't keep the patronage for good.

(And really ... ffs ... why do ye need this outdated "patronage" idea for all schools anyway ... surely time that the Irish state got its A into G and started running some schools of it's own? Leave patronage in place for those patrons who WANT to run schools that parents WANT to send their kids to, let the govt run the rest, like other countries do!)

    Doughiska Community School

I would not tag it as a National School in case it ever gets a Secondary School.

AFAIK a local priest has spent considerable time and effort in trying to get this school off the ground - together with some further community initiatives. A really good man and very interested in getting a sense of community in the new areas of Roscam and Douighiska.
You've got to remember that this is one of the "youngest" and newest areas in the city with very little (bar the playground) infrastructure for the community.
The local priests name is Fr. Martin by the way hence the St. Martins names for the school.
Anyone who has spent some time in the community groups would know him and the effort himself and others have gone to to get some form of a school off the ground.
Frankly, I dont care if it is a catholic or multidom school however those who have put serious effort in improving this community should get some recognition in my opinion.

Also, in these times of catholic church bashing, I have to say the mass in the Roscam sports hall is one of the most unique around and a real good way to start a sunday. I have nothing but good to say about Fr.Martin as he is trying his best to get commnuity groups and community initiaves up and running.

Yes, the new primary school for Doughiska will be under the patronage of the Catholic Church. Educate Together had been offered a site in the area a few years ago, but declined it!
There are proposals for a secondary school also, which I believe will be run by the VEC.
Any word (Catholic/Educate Together) of a school is great. There are 1,000 children under 4 years living in the Doughiska/Roscam area. It is such a shame to see small children waiting on their own for the Parkmore bus (already full with workers) to go to schools in Renmore/Mervue.
Alot of credit for getting the school has to go to Fr.Martin Glynn. It has been an issue that no one has wanted to deal with, certainly not the property developers!
Fair play to Fr.Martin and some very dedicated residents. Great sense of community spirit among them all:)

So why not call it the Fr Martin school? Don't see why St Martin should take all he credit, he's been resting on his laurels for years.

I think Merlin Park School sounds better. Merlin Woods sounds ghey.

I vote for "The Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too"

Who is Derek Zoolander, is he the guy who built the estates down that way?

Its got the official name of Merlin Woods now I believe, nothing wrong with it so long as it provides for the needs of the population of the area.

Educate Together had the go ahead to open a school here in 2005, but were not allowed to use the site to get going. They certainly did not decline the site! They had applied to open this year also btw.

I know the name has been settled on already, but I would have gone for Scoil Dabhach Uisce, since that is the actual name of the place, not a nonsense Anglicisation of an Irish word.

Nice name all the same though, Merlin Woods.
