    Hey,
Can anyone give me an idea of what routes can be taken to work in NZ. I saw the BUNZAC??? option mentioned somewhere here before. What is the story with the WHV..have you to apply from London?? Can it be done from Oz?
Also salaries seem to be pretty poor there. Do people find this much of a hindrance or is the cost of living ok??

You can apply online anytime. Of course you have be 30 or under.
New Zealand is the best country in the world but the wages there are crap!

as stated WHV takes a few minutes online and you should have it in a day or two...after that its just a matter of hopping on a place - wages in general are lower but it all depends what you work at - IT contract rates have picked back up, not as good as Australia but probably better than home at this stage

Oh yeah and NZ is definitely up there with countries to live in :)

How do people find the social life there. Are there a good few Irish. Always easy to meet up with few people in Oz but is NZ much quieter in terms of the social scene..easy to hook up with people through GAA, pubs etc??? What is the weather like..people say it's similar to Ire but are the summers much better/warmer??

Winters are milder, summers are warmer. Insulation is **** so winters feel colder. Try and get a place with a heat pump (I <3 my heat pump!). Summers in NZ are great actually. Actually warm enough to go to the beach after work and things. This summer wasn't as good as the last though.

I think people are quite friendly here. I've made a lot of friends through work and don't have any Irish friends here. In fairness, it helped that my OH is from Wellington so we have his friends as well but I've found work great for meeting people. We have a social club and people socialise a lot. A lot of workplaces have touch rugby teams and things like that too.

As for wages, yes they are shocking but after being here for almost two years and gettind residency my salary is now the same as it was at home (if you converted it to euros) so I'm actually better off what with the cost of living here. It can take a while to get back to that level though.

Agree with watna above, but to add.....big difference in temperature between north and south in winter (Auckland winter day rarely if ever below 10°C, inland from Christchurch might remain below freezing for a while) while there is no such thing as central heating. They'll just tell you to put on another jumper!

Big cities would be ok for socialising, there is a GAA club in Auckland, and maybe one in Wellington, but outside of those 2 centres social life is quiet. Found a lot of people's friendship there very fleeting, not sure if you've had the same experience in Oz?
