...so you think it could have been a pen based on one other players reaction, who may or may not have seen, despite the fact that you can clearly see there was no penalty...we've seen the replays, it wasn't a penalty, there was no foul in the box, doesn't get much simpler then that...

Jesus, Carra luck there too, close to the box, ref could have given a pen :)

    Carra deserved the yellow

Why is Rooney everywhere? Our defense isn't strong....

I think that's great refing. Gave advantage, let see what happened, and then pulled it back.

Wouldn't pay too much heed to what Carra did, he's a hot head, and the pen had already been given at that stage, i'd be very surprised if he saw more then we did with our many many replays.

But he clearly thought it was a foul - The premier league TV culture, seems to lend itself to controversy - we are talking a very marginal decision here - if one of liverpools own experienced players believed it was a foul, i wouldn't be to upset about conceding it. Maybe mascerano shouldn't have tried to deny a goal scoring opportunity in the first place??

Good half. Full of controversy, bite, and confrontation.

The match hasn't been half bad either ;)

    HT.

good start. Few bad decisions from the ref, including the pen.

Very cagey since, shame. Can see some players being sent off in this game.

No that was the sniper, Gerrard has the starfish move.

Had to laugh at how Rooney big reaction took place a second after the contact.

A typical Utd - Liverpool game and thread!

A bright start by both sides ends up with a lot of jabbing/probing but nothing looking like a knockout blow. Neither manager will be unhappy or thrilled.

Gerrard is mainly absent so far, wouldn't mind Yossi on for him in truth.

It was a foul, absolutely no doubt about it.

It was outside the box though

    Oh well.

Utd absolved of a lazy start by some refereeing incompetence. All the momentum in their favour and everything points to them winning in the second half.

? What makes you think Carra saw any of it!? Carra reaction to the hand being pointed at the spot by the ref.

Again, i'm not understanding you at all, why are you talking about the penalty like there is some potential debate on it?

Mascherano committed a foul, we can all that with our own eyes. Mascherano did not commit a foul in the box, again we can all see this with our own eyes. Where is the confusion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

All in all, after the penalty, United have had the better of it. Mascherano's yellow has played a big influence on the game and he isn't as destructive as he normally is.

United's attack has been stunted by Park and Carrick imo. Park's tough has let him down a bit, and Carrick's passing, aside being at fault for the goal, has been pretty poor. Nani is getting doubled up on consistantly, and Valencia is doing well on the wings. Rooney is playing well enough.

    As for Liverpools attack,
Torres is the real threat up front, but is looking a frustrated figure. Kuyt is giving it his all, but is going to be part of the move, but not the key part. Gerrard created the goal, but overall has been poor, once again looking a frustrated figure. Maxi you would barely notice is playing.

Going to be a tight second half, although I'm hopeful Liverpool might get tired. We need 3 points here, no other result is good enough.

It was never a penalty! Extremely frustrating!

Well I meant by cheating, if he wants to do it with in the laws of the game, thats fine by me.

It would be if the situations were similar TRO but no part of this offence occurred in the box, you can argue that it could have been a free where the offence started but not that the two situations are the same as they are not.

I've said twice I'm listening to rather than watching the match, but Chris Waddle says peno if that's any use.

I'll wait until MOTD2 to see the replays, but was Masherano last man (as suggested on another forum I'm watching) and if so is the alternative a free and red card? If so, isn't that similar to the response Jose got for the goal that he claimed never was...;););)

I am using a phone. Mash and Torrres are scared to tackle as Webb is a home ref.

Rooney jumped into a tackle in front of him and did not even give Liverpool a free

I have to laugh at some of these comments. Liverpool could be down to 9 men and their V-sign flashing, elbow-flailing captain is lucky to be starting this game and yet of course...ALL THE DECISIONS GO TO UNITED.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10,259 ✭✭✭✭Melion

Id like to see Babel and N'Gog on for Maxi and Kuyt.

Switch to 442 with Gerrard on the right, Babel to use his pace to destroy Neville and 2 up front with pace to scare even more shít out of Vidic and Rio

Im very anxious of Liverpool getting another goal, they have been dangerous at times going forward, we lack a little cutting edge up top, chances all falling to Park!

That was a truly pathetic penalty decision, he was pulled back about two yards outside the box and he jumped inside. The irony of it is it should have been a red card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

That's his job. Why would he not try to do it.

This is something that Liverpool fans don't seem to realise. As a player, you need to be aware that sometimes, the ref is going to make mistakes. When you give the ref the decision to make in that situation, I'm sorry, whether its right or wrong, I'd say 50% of those would be given penalties, and I'd say about 25% of them would be given red cards. It was bad play from Mascherano.

On a side note, it was even worse from Carragher, because I feel Mascherano tugged him initally to slow him down in time for the CB to get across to cover, but because of Carragher's bad position, he had to pull him harder and longer than he would have liked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,068 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

Very competitive first half. Mascherano lucky not to be given a red although there is also an argument that the vast majority of his tugging happened outside the box. It was still a really silly challenge though. Liverpool were slightly better for the first 30 minutes or so while United came back into it towards the end of the half. Very little in it though. Im quite surprised at the low tempo United seem to be playing at also.

Webb tends to favour the home team. This is proven by the way Rooney got away with a two-footed tackle right in front of him :)

great start totally undone by the ref. as Llyod said, the momentum is wit United and expect them to win to be honest, Park or Webb to score maybe.

No mate, there were many defenders nearby. He would not have gone whatever the outcome. Although this ref is having a mare and I suppose could have sent him. How Rooney is not off for a two footed lunge when Torres is booked for that I will never know.

Utd don't get tired? Babel is the ideal impact sub on the left and Yossi on the right.

Tbf, in real time, it was a very tough decision to make to see whether the foul was comitted in or outside the box.
