Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Shamelessly nicking this from RedCafe - think it is a nice topic.

Who would make your chosen teams 6 a side, and who do you reckon would have the best side around?

For United, my outfield players would be the following:

    Evra, Ferdinand, Scholes, Fletcher, Rooney.

In goals, VDS would probably get the nod, but i actually think Tommy K could be a great keeper in a 6 aside team - great shot stopper and great reflexes. His weaknesses - command of the box and aerial ability would be exposed in these games.

I reckon Arsenal would have a fab side. Their technique and quick passing and feet would be great in tight small games.

From outside the prem, Barcelona would be mouthwatering too in terms of speed of passing and control - but who would you pick? If you go keeper and two defenders to start then Valdes and Puyol prob start easily enough - Pique or Alves as the partner? Would prob have to go Xavi, Iniesta and Messi as the front 3 but would seem such a shame to leave out Ibrahimovic and Yaya could be a loss too for his defensive ability.

Gerrard, Mascherano and Torres would be a good front 3 for liverpool.

    Johnson

    much better imo

    Cech
    Alex Cole
    Lampard Essien
    Drogba

Alex will score those power up long range goals all day. Cole will skip past people all day slipping people through. Lampard is a genius and Essien is the best player to ever play football. Drogba will win us those crucial penalties with his dives.

carragher and mascherano would be ****e at 6 a side, not good enough passers or creative enough. put in johnson and aquilani

    arsenal could have

almunia, clichy, song, fabregas, RVP, arshavin

    would be unbeatable IMO

Terry would fall over alot and is not great at the 1 - 2 short passing. Alex or Carvalho FTW

Yeah you wouldn't really need a decent goalie, keeper hasn't a hope of saving the majority of shots in 6 aside. Eboue would do.

Eboue's madskillz would rule the 6 aside field. If it's 6 aside you're playing with reduced size goals and the keeper is an afterthought. Eboue's ability to skip past players would be unmatched.

Carrick would be decent in a six a side when he's likely to be given a lot of space

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,709 ✭✭✭CR 7

    Cusack
    Ferdinand
    Scholes
    Nani
    Berbatov
    Rooney

Had to leave out Evra, cos his shooting isn't the best, and with his pace, 2 strides and he'd be 6 yards out. Nani and Berbatov would be handy enough too I'd say. Scholes is a necessity, nobody else in the world with his vision, and speed of thought, by the time he has the ball, he knows where everyone else is, and what pass to give, would run circles around any team.

Lots of space in a 6 a side?

    Do you play full pitch?

Ah - a reason to debate - nnnnnnnnnnnnice.

My reasoning for the two players.

Fletcher provides the hustle and tackling that I personaly think is needed in a 6aside game. His passing is also under-rated imo.

As for Scholes - every United player says that when they have 5aside games in training, Scholes is the best player by a mile. That is more than enough for me. At United, there isn't a better passer of ball at United, and no one better at controlling tempo and space.

I don't see a real good reason for picking either Nani or Valencia to be honest. I can see Nani has the quick feet and dribbling - but his passing is terrible and I reckon he would frequently end up running into the corners! As for Valencia - I really don't see the point. In a small 6aside game there isn't going to be space down the line to exploit and his crossing will be ineffectual in such a game.

Sure Evra is a stunning dribbler of the ball and an excellent defender. Links well with other players and has great technique - great choice at the back imo.

Also, I still reckon that you need a slightly defensive player in the midfield, hence my inclusion of Fletcher (picked over Carrick because Carrick doesn't have quick enough feet and doesn't hustle as much as Fletcher would)

    VDS
    Raf-Rio
    Scholes-Fletcher
    Rooney

Rafael has quick feet and has pace, but unlike Evra he doesn't take big long strides that would have him in the oppo goal after 4 steps.:P

    Rest picks itself.

    2-2-1;

    Howard
    Jagielka
    Heitinga
    Fellaini
    Arteta
    Yakubu

I think Osman would do great in 6-a-side too, he has some awesome control skills, but I would think Fellaini brings a better balance.

I chose Yak over Saha because the pitch is smaller and he doesn't have to run around so much, which Yak always seems to assume is a ridiculous amount of work to have to do.

for united fans, ye'd need berbatov in there. his first touch and passing would be vital

spurs: keeper, bale, king, modric, gudjohnson, defoe
villa: keeper, davies, milner, young, carew, delph

Villa Team. Read it and weap.

    Guzan
    Collins Warnock
    Milner Young
    Gabby

Full of pace, and all round awesomeness. Of course if I could I'd pick James Milner 6 times.

    -Mannone-

    Eboue----Diaby

    --Fabregas--Arshavin--

    --Van Persie--
    = WIN.

Mannone is only useful for shot stopping, and it's nearly impossible to get the ball off the rest of them. Nasri was also a contender but there was no room. :(

Rodwell at the back instead of Jag or Heitinga imo - can attack and defend very well for such a young player

    Too many!

Ferdinand isn't a good footballing defender. Vidic, Gallas and Vermaelan and the likes are much better at it.

    Great topic.

How anyone can leave Vermaelen out of an Arsenal 6-a-side team is beyond me though. Ball skills, shooting, pace, defending... what's not to love?

VDS, Rio, Fletch, Valencia, Rooney, Berbatov.

    VDS,
    Rio, Fletch,
    Valencia, Rooney
    Berbatov

Fletcher, Valencia, Rooney have more than enough energy to cover the defensive duties with Rio, and support Berbatov. Have you ever watched Berbatov in the warm up "piggy in the middle" games? The stuff he attempts (and pulls off in them) is brilliant to watch!

    Hmmm...

    Given
    Richards - De Jong
    SWP - Adam Johnson
    Tevez

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,909 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

    Given
    Kompany - Toure
    Ireland - Tevez
    Adebayor

Toure is an average player in general but he has pace, strength, and a good shot on him. De Jong wouldn't be in for me because in general his passing is awful.

Ireland would be the man to pick holes on a small pitch, and Ade is the perfect short game target man.

    Howard
    Rodwell
    Baines
    Arteta
    Pienarr
    Saha/Yakubu SUBS:- Osman, Bily & Saha/Yak

Rodwell and Baines at the back for defensive and attacking capabilities.
    Midfield picks it self imo.
Take your pick upfront, would be leaning towards Saha myself.
