Hello, I got in Eircom 7meg last week and for the first few days it was ok, I was getting speeds of around 3-3.5meg constantly but for the last two days all i am getting is 0.25 of a meg!!!!!!!! The internet is almost unuseable, no youtube, no downloading, no nothing at that speed. What could be the cause of this. Needless to say im utterly pissed off paying for a 7Meg line and recieving 1/4 of a meg is making me want to fold my laptop up and fling it out the window.

Login to Your router by typing 192.168.1.254 in Your browser. Stats can be found by entering expert mode and checking under statistics, dsl stats. Copy and paste them here, they'll tell the real story about your syncing speed, your line and internal wiring quality

I get through to this screen [attached pic]. There seems to be a password already typed into the field (which doesnt work) so I tried the password that came on the underneath of the router [9a13...etc] and that doesnt work either.

    Anyone?

I've not got a netopia so I can't talk You through it, they should be under dsl statistics. It should give the following:

    Downstream and Upstream statistics

    * Max Allowed Speed (kbps): Your maximum speeds for downloading (receiving) and uploading (sending) data on the DSL line, in kilobits per second.
    * SN Margin (dB): Signal to noise margin, in decibels. Reflects the amount of unwanted "noise" on the DSL line.
    * Line Attenuation: Amount of reduction in signal strength on the DSL line, in decibels.
    * CRC Errors: Number of times data packets have had to be resent due to errors in transmission or reception.

    Have a look around

    @ thebanana

If you have the Netopia 2247 modem like i do type 192.168.1.254 into your browser and you'll be greeted with the Netopia homepage,

On the left-hand side you have a few options, click on expert mode and in the middle of the page click yes to enter expert mode.

Now you will see more options again on the left-hand side, click on statistics and immediately a little drop down portion opens with a few more options and you must click the 1st option DSL, then in the middle of the page you will see all your connection stats just like mine here

    LineStats3.png

Copy and paste your stats then here and some of the more knowledgeable folks will diagnose your connection problems.

    Hope that helps you.

Cant find "expert mode" either, it seems to be a completely different webpage to what eircom used to use...

Ahh the Zyxel router is what you have, should have asked you before listing what you needed to do with regards the Netopia modem to get your line stats.

  • Registered Users Posts: 788 ✭✭✭John2009

Have you tried unplugging everything from the phone socket and plugging your modem directly into it?
With everything unplugged try and post your stats with just the modem plugged into it.

Edit :Take out filters aswell and if you have a cordless home phone switch it off.

Attenuation of 63db is on the edge of the ADSL's limitations. The max a line that far from the exchange would be 2Mb - You would never get 7Mb on a line that long

I signed up for a 7meg package. I was getting between 3 and 3.5 constantly until yesterday.

However: Unplugged the DSL filter and the cable splitter box[phone and computer line splitter] and plugged the cable directly from the router into the socket in the wall and I got this.
    756461363.png
Still nowhere near what I was getting.

Disconnect sky box from phone line, remove anything else that plugged into the phone line, move the modem to the main eircom socket comming into the house. If you still dont get your over 4M during the day (ie off peak) then down grade to a 3M package. This will make it more stable aswell.

I just checked it now its up over the 2meg anyway.

Sky was only connected to the phone line the first day it was installed, there are no phones in the house and the alarm isnt connected to the phone system either. I'll check it again tomorrow during the day and I'll post up the results.

Thanks for all the help anyway lads.
