Hi,just wondering if I floor out an attic, will the ceilings below crack?

Also, what is the correct way to floor out an attic,as in what way to lay the flooring.

Its the grooved chip board floor panels that slot together for attic instalation.

    Thanks.:)

it will depend on the size of the joists and spacing. How old is the house?

as for laying the floor. you will want to lay it perpendicular to the joists. avoid having joints in the flooring over empty space. as in the joints should be on or as close to the joists as possible.

It all depends on the thickness of the joist and the weight of whatever is going to go on the floor. If the joists are 8 inches or thicker you should be ok to screw straight to them.

If you have a truss roof the joist could be 3 or 4 inches. What you would have to do is build up the thickness of the joist. Screw 2x2 to the length of the joist and then screw another length of 2x2 to it.

Your flooring then screws to the joists, don't nail it, that will definetly crack the ceiling.

This is what I have in the attic. The joist is 7 inches.

Whats the best way to put fown some attic floors with that thickness of joist then?

    Thanks.:)

you will be grand. . lash the T&G boards in and screw them down.

As longs as you are not living in the attic space or up there disco dancing , there will be no cracking.

Try and insulate between the joists before flooring is in. Dont compress the inso to much.

Thanks for the advce,I feel more reassured now.

Its just for storing the likes of the Xmass tree and few cardboard boxes of stuff.Just for general storage space in the house.

Attic will never be converted into a habitable room as there isnt enough space to stand up in it.

With regards the insulation, you mean 200mm insulation roll that you cut to size and then roll out in between the joists?

Like Rockwool or British gas loft roll that BnQ have for sale cheap?
