I rang up Meteor today to swap back from bill pay as I'm leaving in a month. They said as long as I top up every 6 months the number will remain active. Not that I'm planning on using my Irish phone much in Australia (just to receive texts and send the odd reply!) but who is the cheapest Irish network to be with for this?

Nobody?! Checked out the CallCosts.ie website and it would appear 3 is the cheapest! It's free to receive calls from Ireland once you are on the 3 network there. Also free to receive texts and only 5c to send! Bargain?!

Just spoke with 3 customer care there -it costs the same to make a call/send a text in Australia to Ireland on the 3 network as it would if you were in Ireland! :D

Just checked 3's website and it says you do have to pay in Australia unless you're on a billpay plan, http://three.ie/international/country_au_2.htm

The rep on the phone told me I wouldn't have to?! I explicitly asked about pay as you go! Gonna call again and find out!
