    Unreal here today!

Massive electrical storm hit the city this afternoon and took out one of the main power stations.

It was mad walking around a ghost town with no lights at 5pm and it took me 90 minutes to do a 25 train journey home as we got stuck in a tunnel due to flooding.

Looks like it's down for the night as well!

A SEVERE storm has caused chaos across Perth, cutting power to thousands, closing train stations, shopping centres and schools and damaging homes and cars.

Golf-ball sized hailstones pelted the city at 4pm, smashing roofs and cars while flash flooding closed trains stations and shopping centres.

Flights were cancelled at the domestic and international airports.

"Part of the roof at Qantas terminal, Perth domestic airport had water gushing in through the light fittings above baggage carousels. Then the roof over the carousel collapsed and water flooded in,'' a Qantas worker told PerthNow.

More than 70,000 homes are without power and officials have closed Ocean Reef Senior High School, Mindarie Senior College and Shenton College because of extensive storm damage."

The schools will remain closed tomorrow.

Severe storms were forecast to hit regions from Kalbarri to Mandurah, including inland communities and the central and west Wheat Belt.

Hundreds of commuters are stuck on trains, traffic lights are down and Carousal Shopping Centre has been evacuated."The place is flooded and for safety reasons people have been evacuated from the building. It's really scary,'' said an employee.

Meanwhile, residents report their homes have been damaged by falling trees and strong winds.

Hailstones have shattered windows, skylights and car windscreens.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital will be closed to all outpatient and elective surgery tomorrow because of water damage.

Senior Forecaster with the WA Bureau of Meteorology's severe weather division Noel Puzey said the storm, which moved across Perth about 3.30pm on Monday, is just one of many currently moving south.
"More thunderstorms are forecast until tomorrow morning," Mr Puzey said.

"It's only one single thunderstorm cell that has produced the severe weather, there are plenty of other storm cells in the north but whether there will be anything as severe as this we don’t know. It is unlikely."

The city was blackened as the storm moved through. It was caused by a surface tough combined with unstable air in the north.A Western Power statement said lightning was the main cause of widespread problems affecting power tonight across northern and southern suburbs.

"Once the second front has passed Western Power will be in a better position to start restoring power to customers. With the wide spread damage Western Power expects a significant number of customers to be without power overnight," a spokesperson said.

Residents are reporting shattered windows, car damage and flooding across the metropolitan area.

Inner-city suburbs including Leederville and Subiaco have been hard hit and a fallen tree has blocked Kings Park Rd.

"The hail just destroyed our pergola - all the sheets are punched through by gold-ball size hailstones,'' a Perth resident posted on Twitter.

"My house is being smashed - hail punching through fibro sheeting like wet cardboard,'' posted another.

    PerthNow

reader Paul Jarvis said: "Quinns was pounded by large hailstones, up to gumnut size for around 15 mins, the rain was torrential, more than I've ever seen."

"Gutters overflowed all around and floods quickly ran through taking kids toys and patio furniture with the torrents.

"Cars in the street showed significant damage from the hailstones.

"Around fencelines and garden beds, the hailstones where several inches deep."

Even West Coast Eagles players were caught up in the storm mayhem.

Andrew Embley told PerthNow that the storm was "extremely scary".

“There was flooding, trees uprooted. It was something I’ve never seen before," he said.

“At one stage I contemplated actually pulling over. There was a lot of people on the side of the road but you just couldn’t go anywhere.

“The roads were flooded and the noise on the car was just frightening,” he said.

Pint-sized Eagles rookie Adam Cockie got out of his car during the height of the storm to lift a broken tree branch off the road of a major intersection near the oval.

WA’s State Emergency Service FESA is warning people caught outside to seek shelter away from trees and metal structures.

Reckon the storm in Melbourne a few weeks ago was worse Neil, $350m worth of damage in 20 minutes, hailstones the size of fookin cricket balls. Walked by a car lot and practically every car looked like the one above. They had to change from an opening sale to a 'hail sale' :)

Yeah Rory still a chance, but we'll balls it up no doubt!

Apparently there was a massive landslide at Kings Park this evening! Apartments below were covered with mud and water and one occupant is still missing tonight.

    Crazy

I was living in Sydney when this storm hit. It was there and gone in an hour and caused crazy damage to the place.

Evacuated from our apartment on Mounts Bay Road, had to spend night in the Convention Center last night.
