You're supposed to return the old one when applying for a new one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,089 ✭✭✭henryporter

You don't have to return the old one if you do an online application - I got mine in 10 days recently.

My old one is thrown out
have you the old passport number and expiry date at least so you can do an online renewal ?

My old one is thrown out

Then you'll need to get the Guards to witness your application, there's a declaration on the form that you need to sign.

Is this the first passport you've lost/thrown out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 108 ✭✭Jamesyboid88

Yeah it's the first one I've lost

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,121 ✭✭✭amcalester

Should be OK then, but I'd get the application in as soon as possible.

Just follow the steps on the form, it's pretty straight forward.

I'd do it online. you don't need to go to the gardai to sign a statement etc but hang on to your old passport just in case the passport office ask for it.

I lost my last passport (but it was my first loss) got the new passport book and passport card within 10 days.

Believe it or not my passport is at home hasnt been used yet as i have used my passport card for travel and id purposes.

I have a photo I took of my passport. Can I use that image instead of saying it's lost or stolen

    No.
Just for the details I have to provide them

As long as you can read the relevant details for online application, it's worth keeping the image safe.

Who throws a passport in the bin??

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,069 ✭✭✭✭Sleeper12

Old passport is knackered and thrown in bin. Need a new one before 23d January. How hard will it be to get a new one ?

If your old passport is still valid then you need to return it.

If it's out date then you should be fine

Yeah. I don't get that either. A passport is an important and valuable document. I've seen people abroad with their passport hanging out of one back pocket and their €1000 phone out of the other. People are strange.

yeah i made my mistake and it was taken on me in Amsterdam.

    Never again!

If i can, I wont take my passport with me, just use my passport card.

Renewed mine last week online. Hardest part was going to get a digital photo and them sending it on to me.

Submitted the application on Saturday it took 10 minutes. Had the new passport posted in the letterbox on the following Friday, the most efficent government process i have witnessed to date.

I think its always worth taking a photo of your passport and emailing it to yourself.
Then you always have a copy you can retrieve, whether at home or abroad.
Driving licence and birth cert also.

If your old passport is still valid then you need to return it.
They want it in order to stamp CANCELLED on it, but it will be returned to you.

I have filled in various international applications (USA mainly) where they have asked me to list each passport that I have held for the last 10 years, in my case that was 7 actual books.

So don't throw the things out.

OK says twice that he put it in bin, then says he lost it. Strange.

Was it still valid or an out of date passport?

had 5 months left on it

I applied for a new one on Saturday, tracker said this morning that it will be arriving around Dec 14th (estimated). Took 15 minutes.

Got my photo taken in an authorised booth for €8. I did not need to prove that I have the existing passport (I do), just needed the details off it, such as number, date of expiry etc.

    Very handy process overall.

Travelling to Amsterdam end of January and worried about my passport as I've been told different things. My passport expires June 2018. Is it ok to travel with less then 6 months before expiration
