how old is the child? vat on childrens clothing for under 11s is zero rated.

Thanks for the quick reply, the coat is age 8. So there should be no VAT regardless of value?

correct. reply to An Post and tell them that it is childrens clothes and therefore should be zero rated for vat purposes.

    Good catch!

In this case, it is moot, but you should only pay VAT on the bid price plus postage.

Thanks, that’s good to know. It would make buying off eBay very expensive if they were using the value of the item when new.

I just received a package of facemasks sent from my brother in Hong Kong, but DHL were looking for 40 euro, so didn't accept the package wanted to find out first. Thoughts? Or just forget about it.

Face masks are meant to be 0% VAT; It even says facemasks on the box..

"On that basis, the Minister has requested that Revenue considers applying the zero rate to personal protection equipment, ventilators and oxygen as necessary to combat COVID-19 when supplied to hospitals, nursing homes, GP practices and the like, for use in the delivery of COVID-19 related health care services to their patients." Not free for personal use, by the looks of it.

Shame, right you are, it was only a small box of disposable masks, no declared price on the box is the issue I imagine but only a few dollars worth of masks, shipping was the only cost. Will have to leave it off then.

Also, ask the supplier if they can deduct VAT (only applies to new stuff).

Looking to buy a battery on a site called hardkernel (Korea). The item total comes to €21.78. I'll be alright yeah? Because they use Fedex and I've read they charge no matter what.

Depends on the rate of exchange and I’d imagine FedEx’s freight cost will put it over the amount for VAT.

Does anyone know for certain one way or the other if there are customs charges on books ordered from online shops outside the EU?

I thought books were exempt. There are never any extra charges on books from Amazon so I thought it was safe enough and made an order from another UK shop. I've since been looking at more shops that only sell books and the websites all mention customs charges so now I'm unsure. I can't seem to find a definitive answer searching here on boards and elsewhere online.

I've ordered about €37 worth of second hand non-fiction reference books and I want to make sure it won't be an issue when they arrive.

Books are at 0% VAT rate here afaik so there shouldn't be any additional charge.

    Hi guys,

Friend looking to import a space saver wheel from UK, is £170 including postage.

Am I right in saying he will pay 23% vat on this £39 plus handling fee?

Just a quick question, I'm thinking of ordering from UK using Address Pal. I know I have to Pay address Pal fee of €6.50 and 23% VAT of Value + Postage. (It under €150 so no customs duty).

Am I able to claim back the Vat from the UK retailer? As the goods are being consumed in Ireland whcih is why I'm paying Irish VAt but surely shouldn't need to pay UK Vat As well.

    Would appreciate some advice. Thanks

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,043 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

You would have to contact HMRC. Using AddressPal means it is going to a UK address as far as the UK retailer are concerned and they have to charge VAT. This question has been asked before but not answered.

I will move this post over to the Addresspal thread in the couriers forum, as it is pertinent there.

You can't claim back from the UK retailer, either they sell to you without UK VAT or you claim back from HMRC. You will have to satisfy the UK retailer that the goods are being exported out of the UK for them to exclude the VAT and to claim back from HMRC you will have to prove the exportation has been completed.

    Reminder:
On 01 July, the VAT exemption value up to EUR 22 will be removed. This means all goods imported in the EU will now be subject to VAT.https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/vat/vat-e-commerce_en

What happens if you order something before the 1st of July and it doesn't arrive until after? Do they go by the date of purchase or the date it enters the EU?

That is wrong from UPS anyway. VAT @ 23% should be about €99ish.

You're right. Assumed there was duty included due to value but just checked and should be 0% duty.

Just learnt about Import VAT from 1st of July.

It is just not fair - 15 euro socks costing you 27 euro in the end. Ireland should manufacture things and actually earn money, not just collect tolls.

Anyhow, I will buy from AliExpress european warehouses.

We used to have clothing manufacturing in Ireland, and guess what? Asian manufacturing countries cut the ass out of the prices.........The good news now is that Aliexpress will be paying tax into the EU.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8 acork

The sad news is that it will not bring clothing manufacturing back to Ireland.

How do DHL Express collect VAT? Do they charge on the doorstep (so I would probably need to have the exact amount ready) or do they send an invoice after delivery? Just want to be prepared. Thank you.

AFAIK they send you a link by text to pay online. Unlike UPS and FedEx they won't deliver until you pay.

Dispute opened, UPS non-responsive with auto-reply indicating 45 days to respond. Escalated to my bank, payment reversed and dispute form completed. Updated UPS all the way, and not being unwilling to pay, I want to pay the correct amount. It's up to them now to show the charges and request payment... again

I think FedEx usually deliver it to you first and then send a bill by post later.

I got a delivery from Fedex last Tuesday and got invoice via email today. Paid on their site but it timed out and I got "unable to complete transaction" message. The amount was debited from my account so just emailed them with proof of payment and asked them to confirm receipt of funds.

Still unclear from reading the 1st post abt the Duty id end up paying.
I can't find it on it list on revenue website, guinness tap seems to be an outlier 🙈

Everything is included in the Taric, down blood and human organs. You have to dig it’s not going to say “Guinness tap” it will be under valve or pumps presumably. The supplier in the UK might have it.

Weve got a grant to buy equipment for the job we're in and one of the items is a camera for €3000.00 It is ready to be shipped now once we pay invoice but we just thought could we be charged from customs on arrival for this. It is coming form the US, many thanks in advance...

Could anyone advise me on this?

I purchased an item from eBay UK. Total cost was £20.20 including postage , this amounted to €24.39 taken from my bank account.
Expected to get a email to pay something.
However I got one this evening looking for €12.94
In email it states customs value €41.05 which I can't understand really

It's not very clear how you can look for clarification or any form of customer service.
Can anyone advise how to query this?

    €12.94 sounds like the VAT + An Post's €7 handling fee (at least I think it's €7)

It should be €5.61 + their handling fee, but it should state that one is their handling fee, it would not be all the one charge.

Also, I have seen it mentioned here that the €6 negligible value is scrapped, but I cannot find any information about it online anywhere, so maybe it is not scrapped yet? If not, then you shouldn't owe anything. But may need to double check that first.

EDIT - Regarding how to query it, there should be an email address or contact number in the email you were sent, contact them and ask them where they got that value from.

  • Registered Users Posts: 468 ✭✭phester28

if the total paid including was below 26 euro then revenue do not want to collect any vat and no handling charge should be levied. That is until 1st of July when the rules change.

Something does not add up here.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,043 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

€6 lower collection was scrapped in early January. Revenue removed all mention of it from their documentation.
