i would also make sure that the items are actually rated as 0% duty. I would never just take the suppliers word for this.

where will I find if is rated at 0% duty?

you have to know how the goods are classified. take a look here

Thanks for your help but my calculations don't add up I think I'm gonna try to get a cheaper shipping rate maybe by boat, because with the delivery and taxes and all I could buy the product cheaper in Ireland.

    Hello monacko25,

As suggested in my previous post, please ask your supplier to confirm the HS/Customs tariff number.

Or, if you post / PM the details of the commodity I can check it for you. Whilst the links posted are well intended, unless you know your way around the systems, it may actually lead you in the wrong direction.

    Cheers,
    Rudolf289

I'd be very wary about buying electronics from China for sale here. Can you share what it is? are you going to be selling in an actual shop? is it branded (if fake it can be seized and destroyed).

I know there is a lot of fake stuff around its from ALIBABA.COM the seller has good feedback the product it not fake or branded, it will have to be that cheap because with shipping and after it gets through customs after vat you'd be surprised not that much profit.

given the cost of shipping an item weighing 37kg i would be surprised if there is any profit at all. Especially as you will have to pay 23% VAT on that shipping cost.

The size above is for 3 items not for 1 so there is a bit of margin, just trying to find some cheap shipping.

There are shipping companies who will organise the sharing of pallets for several people. So it maximises the usage of the weight/voulme being sent. This can cause delays if you are waiting. I cannot remember the term for this, the entrepreneur forum might be better.

I still think it is very risky as the stuff could arrive dead on arrival, or fail within warranty. Be sure the feedback is genuine as its easy to fake it. I would also be wary of stuff going obsolete. Are you certain there is a market for this item, they may be on sale here but have you put up even test adverts?

    Consolidation/Groupage ?

Yes, there are companies that specialise in shipping Less than Container Loads (LCL). The consolidate the shipments at origin into a container.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I cant find it here. I'm thinking of buying something on eBay from the US and the listing says "No additional import charges on delivery" they (eBay, not the original seller) seem to have some scheme where they calculate import charges and you pay them to them upfront.

Now I have no doubt that this is probably a ripoff, but does it even work? ie could I still be charged tax by the Irish authorities on delivery? though it purportedly covers import charges the fine print is very confusing - it says :
    "Import charges don't include:
    - Income taxes
    - Commodity taxes
    - Any customs duties, taxes, surcharges, fines, penalties, or other charges which may be imposed on you by customs or tax officials after an item purchased through the Global Shipping Programme has successfully cleared customs and been delivered to, or made
available for pickup at, the delivery address that you specify.
Import charges are in addition to the customs duties and taxes imposed by country tax and customs officials. For additional information about applicable fees, see the Global Shipping Programme Buyer Terms & Conditions."

Does anybody have an experience with this scheme?

I am importing a piece of musical equipment from Australia. The equipment itself is worth €2000 with postage on top of that.
I think that the import vat that I will have to pay is 23%.
Would it change if I got it it to sent to a friend in Australia and he repackaged it and sent it on to me?

Would it be better to purchase it through a company I work with, use their vat number and get it posted to them from the supplier?

What would happen if I got it sent to parcel motel in the uk from the supplier and they then send it on to me?

    Any advice appreciated.

Ebay GSP actually works but it takes a lot of time to arrive. What you see is what you pay.

does any one know of a post service that could deliver to Ireland, same way as PARCEL MOTEL works but only in US? (you buy something from US, order it to US address and then they send it to you EU)

    Hi,

about 6 months ago I bought a sports item from the USA to the value of around 120$ including shipping. The parcel was declared correctly and handled by an Post but for some reason I was not charged any duty etc. Last month the item broke and the seller agreed to send me a replacement but, since I supplied him with sufficient evidence, did not request the return of the broken one. The replacement arrived a few days ago but this time I had to pay duty and VAT on the replacement. The vendor had stated the value of the item, although I did not pay anything for it.
What are my chances of claiming back these charges? Since I have not paid anything for the replacement I wonder if it is legitimate for revenue to uphold these charges based on the grounds that they failed to charge me on the original item.

Hi, i have a question, i bought a lot of stuff from china before and i only payed the customs 23% vat of the total, but recently i bought few video cameras and had to pay 23% vat + 14% duty of the total, my question is when do you pay duty and when not? i just used the site (dutycalculator.com) and put down the exact things that i got and it saying that i should pay 23%vat only and duty 0, dont know i feel that the customs are wrong, are they?

duty will not kick in until the value is over €150, I know digital cameras are 0% from duty. Video cameras do have duty.

I've a package from China with DHL at the moment with a VAT charge that I'm disputing.

    Details-

    Item cost $31.00
    DHL Express $10.39
    Total $41.39

The seller put a total of $30 on the shipping invoice and didn't detail the shipping cost.

Because the shipping is not specifically listed DHL use their current reverse rate to the originating country i.e. sending said package back to China less 30%.

All in all they are charging €34 VAT and admin.

I've supplied them with a copy of the invoice from the seller plus a copy of the transaction from Paypal but they're not budging.

I just want to see if anyone else had success or any pertinent information with a similar dispute.

    Hi there,
I purchased an item from Japan through a forwarder. They had a coupon for €80~ off the cost of shipping the item to me and since it's a heavy item I went for it, meaning that I only paid about €38 for the shipping. The problem is, of course that since the company paid for the rest of the shipping(which in total came to about €100ish, including my portion), do I have to pay tax on item cost and total shipping? Or can I explain to revenue what happened with the coupons and only pay for item cost and my portion of shipping? I don't mind paying the tax, just that I don't want to be paying tax for the amount that I didn't pay shipping for!

Its the real cost to ship, doesnt matter what you paid. They can even sometimes re-asses charges where they believe them to be fake.
