this seems to be the norm now for courier companies.

I did see online people have sent letters contesting the admin charge and they have had the charges removed.

Will see when I get my bill out I guess!

If you import from outside the EU you should expect to pay charges, including someone having to do a customs entry and pay the Vat/Duty on your behalf.

I agree with your statement to a point. Duty should be paid to Revenue and not to a third party collector. Let the courier collect their "Administration" charge from Revenue or let Revenue contact me directly.

why would a courier bother doing something for nothing?

As he is performing a service for the Revenue and not on my behalf or with my permission let him claim from Revenue , Let those that profit from his action pay him. Why expect me to pay him.

Revenue don't do customs clearance, and nor should they - it would leave them open to all sorts of temptations. The reality of the situation is that someone has to clear all imports that require it from outside the EU. Either pay them, or find someone that does it for free.

I ordered a couple of things from the US and the total came to just under $80 including postage, which converts to about €66.

I'm expecting to pay about €15 and VAT and a €15 handling charge

It's coming by DHL. Will the courier request the money at the door or will I get invoice afterwards.

    What's the normal for DHL?

    Thanks 😀

According to a thread on the first page, the driver will take cash only. I presume that applies to all their drivers.

The last time I dealt with them, the driver wouldn't take cash until he rang the base first.

The norm seems to be that they will value the postage as 80-90euro, and charge VAT on that value in addition to the 15 euro you estimate. So be ready to challenge them.

    I've one more stupid question.

If I refuse an item from DHL that has Customs/VAT due on it, is it sent back to the sender or is it destroyed?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 14,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

AFAIK, they reclaim the VAT/Duty paid out and destroy it. Better ringing them to check, though.

Q: I ordered some clothes worth 21,11, postage is free (couldn't find these items on any european site).

Now, I see the customs allow 22€, postage included.

I'm worried they might charge me 10€ An Post fee + VAT.

Anybody had a similar amount and hopefully a good experience with our customs?

    Thanks.

Mod: moved to the Import/VAT thread. Please do not re-open 3 year old threads.

They allow for €6 - i.e. if the VAT is less than €6 they will not collect it.

Also, if the clothes are for a child or children under 11, then they will have a zero rate of vat.

Either way, you should be good anyway.

    Hi,
I have an old American made Pocket watch, been in family for years and never worked. I set about trying to get it fixed. Cannot find anywhere in Ireland to do it. Called specialist in UK but was told it could not be fixed. Contacted guy in Nebraska USA and he says no problem, done loads of them. I got any approximate cost from him.

I am on the fence as to whether to get it repaired or not. The cost of striping, cleaning, oiling etc is $135. To fix the broken bits is $110 and to post it back to me is $69 with tracking and insurance. Total of $314. This is a lot of money and I don't know what value the watch will be when done.

I presume that I will be attacked by customs duty if the watch is repaired and returned to Ireland. I went on to revenue site but the examples given are all for good purchased. The watch is mine. The cost of repair is $245 and the postage cost + insurance is $69.

Would anyone know how Customs duty would be calculated,
    Thanks.

I could not find any written information for Ireland (I did not look very hard) but i guess that the same applies.

There should be some information on this https://www.revenue.ie/en/customs-traders-and-agents/documents/export-procedures-guide.pdf

    Edited - from Page 9/10
Goods being exported temporarily may be eligible for relief from duty when they are
    subsequently re-
imported to Ireland/EU. However, Revenue must have been notified of this at
the time of their export by way of the appropriate Customs Procedure Code. You cannot apply
    for this retrospectively

I purchased an itrem of clothing from the U.S. Total cost including postage came to $60. I received it two weeks ago, delivered by Fedex. At the time of delivery the driver did not mention anything about duty etc. Yesterday I received an invoice from Fedex for €26. this includes €12. prepayment charge. I understand that I have to pay duty to Revenue and an administration charge to Fedex but in the past when I purchased and received anything from outside The EU, I always paid these charges to the driver on receipt of the goods. Anyone have similar recently.

A follow on to the above. I emailed Fedex re the invoice received asking them for either a receipt or a demand from Revenue for the import duty paid. The first email went unanswered except for an automated confirmation that the email was received. . I again resent the email and received an automated response. Approx ten days later I received an email from Fedex asking for shipment numbers and details of my purchases. I scanned the invoice which I received from Fedex and emailed this to them explaining that as it was their invoice, then they would have the necessary information on it. A further seven days later I received an email from them cancelling all charges attached to the invoice. Draw your own conclusions.

Strange they’d find it easier to write off the money, than just supply the paperwork. Couldn’t see their management being happy.

well you got lucky as noted above, they send invoices an post usually are ones who will collect on the spot. Invoice in general is sort of receipt which when presented to customer means both parties have it. Anyway it could be argued about giving you actual receipt about payment confirmed not sure since never needed to pay up, but seems a bit of work and they rather will write it off.

    Stop guessing :P

What happens is you get a text telling you to pay online at www.dhlpayments.ie
It says in the text you have to pay online but you don't, you can also phone, or if you don't get this done in time before delivery, pay the driver.
Or if you can convince the driver otherwise, you can get the parcel then get a letter requesting payment.

Basically it doesn't matter what way you pay as long as you pay

Anyone know what the limits are in the UK. I want to buy something from Aliexpress but was thinking of getting it via PM in the hopes it might get here a bit quicker.

I can't remember what the limits are, but I have tried that,

First item never made it out of customs and was (luckily) returned.
I then made two orders of the same item. One to UK and a week later, one to Ireland.
UK one is still stuck in customs and I can't do anything about it. I have tried contacting them and everyone else. I just have to wait it out.
Ireland one arrived pretty quickly with no charges.

I also ordered another item to UK that was small, and I did it solely for speed. That was almost two months ago and still no sign of it.

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find the relevant thread (if I search exhange its all about exchange rates).

I received some clothes from the US yesterday and paid VAT on collection from the post office. Unfortunately the sizing is wrong and I need to return the items for an exchange.

How do I make sure I do not pay VAT again on the replacement items?
