Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,

Seems like a regular query and I've even Googled it. The problem is my computer more so. I'm wondering if I can add the option of Booting from CD in my computers BIOS in the startup menu.

My computer is really old, like, the oldest of old and as proof; It's a Gateway! It's got 256MB RAM, running Windows 2000 Professional service pack 4. Pentium 4 Processor, much of this is probably no help anyway.

So is my computer too outdated to enable this option, if not could someone please explain how to do it.

    Any help greatly appreciated. :pac:

Not sure if the option can be "added", however, you could set the CD ROM as the first bootable option. You should be able to do this in the BIOS setup when the computer starts up (by pressing F10, Delete or some other key, it should say).

It shouldn't be too dated to do it, but as Ruu points out, it'll likely just be a matter of changing the boot order so that the disc drive is above the HDD :)

Yeah even added would be Ideal however when the computer starts up it says to press tab for something for like half a second but it just displays the system info from what I see after that I can press F8 which bring me to a list of options with Safe Mode, Enable Boot Logging and a few other things but it doesn't have anyhting about adding the Boot from CD,

    Any Ideas?

I'll pay you $10 to throw the machine into the river

Trust me, it would be a profit. :pac:

edit: from what youve said youre not in the bios. This is a typical BIOS menu:

    Main%20BIOS%20Screen.jpg

And from there I believe its under Power Management Features.

What youre describing is the Advanced Boot Menu but tragically enough this page has nothing to do with setting the Boot Order of your hardware devices

I am so tempted haha, it's a just a temporary machine 'til i get the funds for something actually good.

And yeah it was the Setup menu I was looking at although I put the CD in and it boots fine so I guess it works! Do you know how I would get to the BIOS menu? It might be handy in the future. I've tried a few keys and I'm almost sure it give no indication as to what to press.

Just so anyone reading is clear, I have the problem sorted :D

Gateway bios access is usually via pressing F2 on startup. Turn the computer on and don't be shy about repeatedly pressing it. Occasionally it's F1 but about 90% of gateways are F2.

Go to bios advanced options, boot options, boot order,
    boot 0 = cdrom/dvd ,or SET cdrom = 1st boot device.= device 0 .
    0 means first boot device.
set drive hd ,hd 0 to boot 2nd or 3rd. DISABLE fast boot in boot options.
Then save ,click save, or f sumthing save.
DO not exit without saving, new settings..
ON adverts .ie a fast 2.oghz cpu laptop, 15inch lcd with 1gig ram is around 180 euro.
4 that price ,the battery life may be short, just remove the battery when you buy it.
pres f2, or all the f keys if that doesnt work, takes a few seconds to go to bios menu.
LOOK in advanced chipset features, boot options ,if you cant find it.
I think a 1.5ghz p4 cpu is fast enough for web use, if you added 1gig ram, and a larger hardrive.
