Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wheel and crankset prices (building a mixte)

I'm very happy with myself. Just took home a beautiful vintage Raleigh mixte which was abandoned in an alley around the corner. It looks great, but it's missing both wheels, and the crankset looks about fit for the bin.

So I'm wondering, what's the cheapest I could get both a wheelset (with a flip/flop hub) and a crankset? I'm building it up for my girlfriend, and we're both broke, so I'm just going to get average parts, nothing special, and try and make it at aesthetically nice more than mechanically, seeing as she won't notice quality parts.

Would I be able to get wheels and a crankset for under €100? How and where'd be the best way to go about it? (This is going to be my first build).

I think city cycles in stoneybatter is your best bet for fixed wheel, if you want a cheap crankset i'd suggest ebay, you can get a good deal if you're patient. A good deal always comes along. picked up an ultegra crankset and BB for €20 the other day and a brand new track chainring for €7

So you wont be wanting my Truvativ crankset then?:)

Thats some price for an Ultegra Crankset, presumably S/h older model? I thought I was doing well getting a new SL crankset for E100!

To the OP, follow this mans advice and checkout uk eBay site.

Oh yeah, honestly i completely forgot and since then i have discovered the power of ebay. Yeah s/h 6500 ultegra, it ahs a couple scratches and such but i had intended polishing it anyway so it didnt really matter

Very kind person on here pointed me towards rothar.ie, which apparently has boxes full of second hand parts, so I'm going to go up there first and see what they have, then buy anything else I need.

Really looking forward to this now!

Ah yes, i had completely forgotten about rothar.
stopped in pretty recently, seems pretty great if a bit hard to find. It's just a set of black double doors with a smallish sign to the left of the doors out front. Very easy to miss

Thanks for the heads up, it's just up the road from me, but I've never been. Is that big door the one down the road from that display shop place?

That looks good. Appears to be square taper. For singlespeed, do you reckon you could remove the inner chainring and just use the outer, or does the inner need to be there in order to attach the outer to the crank?

you can take off the inner ring but you will need single chainring bolts though...

yeah but it's a 53 outer ring, no good for singlespeeed unless you are talking about a track bike.
