Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 25% to 50% increase in metabolism for 3 hrs after meal

Recently I've discovered the wonders of red hot chilli peppers.

    My lunchbox today:
    • 2 tins of tuna
    • 1 carrott
    • 1 yellow sweet pepper
    • 2 small red hot chilli peppers

Various articles on the net claim that chillis can speed up your metabolism by 25 to 50% for the 3 hours following a meal.

Assuming a basal metabolic rate of 1822 (calculated here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/) then a 25% increase for 3 hours means an extra 57 cals burned. If I assume 50% increase for 3 hours then this translated to 114 calories burned.

This seems like a lot. Thoughts?

I'd be skeptical about such claims, you'd probably have to eat a load of chilli peppers to get such an effect, and they are not exactly palatable

OT, but john west now have packages of Tuna with various dressings. Far more palatable than x2 tins and great for just squeezing out on bread or something.

I'm not sure about the exact extent to which is works but both capsaicum (the stuff that makes peppers hot) and caffeine do boost your metabolism effectively making you burn more calories, we convered it in our sports nutrition module this year.

Yes, I have seen it in some energy/diet pills (which should not be discussed here!).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsaicin
According to animal and human studies, the oral intake of capsaicin may increase the production of heat by body for a short time. Due to the affect on the carbohydrates breakdown after a meal, cayenne may also be used to regulate blood sugar levels. [27] Further research is required to see if capsaicin would be useful to treat obesity

Keeping your body hotter would use more energy. If people want peppers I would highly recommend franks hot sauce. Threads about it here
