I stand corrected on the Sean Keane/editor thing. I was entirely under the impression that it were he. I guess that shows how much I read what he writes in the KK People. I should start reading the editorial again.

I think this stems from the furore around the photo at which point he was the man who issued the apology. And as I said, a horses mouth told me he had dealings with it at the time, but his was not the final call. So my apologies for that one.

I still think he's an absolute hack and the perfect example of what can happen when you give an idiot a pen and a forum on which to write.

As long as dogs drink pints, Jimmy Rhatigan will write about them.

    Lol.

No idea why I came into this thread, since I am not from KK. But that was worth the entry :-)

Just saw the new paper. Not bad at all. Looks good, nicely laid out and even has a few property ads.

And of course Jimmy Rhatigan remains Jimmy Rhatigan. Not only has he the inevitable column about the "characters" of Kilkenny years ago(zzz), there's a front page thing claiming a Kilkenny guy is gonna star in a Hollywood film. Turn to the piece inside and it turns out there MIGHT be a film made which MIGHT feature a guy from Kilkenny - ie the producer has INTIMATED to yer man that there might be a part in it for him.

Still, never let the facts get in the way, eh Jimmy..?!

Oddly enough, no dogs drinking pints anywhere within the paper. What a letdown!

I've had a four figure sum at even money, with a prominent high street bookie, that this sad outfit will fold within 2 years. Absolutely no chance of survival long term.

    He only gave you evens???!!!

What I'd like to know is whether the Recorder has any investors. If it has it stands at least some chance of surviving. If not, then two years is being very optimistic...

There is a story about every dog getting their own pooper scooper with a picture of one of the happy customers grinning from ear to ear.

For lovers of dogs and Jimmy Rhatigan there is a new paper to cater for your needs.

For people who want news and info about Kilkenny, there is the Kilkenny People and Kilkenny Advertiser.

The Kilkenny Reporter looks great, but the pint-drinking dogs and Mrs Murphy's knickers are sadly lacking. The three of them will be knackered keeping up the Top Ten thing every week, people features and the rest.
The People is gone to hell and I thought Keane was the editor too because there is no sign of any editor doing anything. Do they not have sub-editors at all? The press releases going in verbatim from the politicians is a holy show.
When was the last time any of them actually got a story, even a very small, local one?

I was reasonably impressed with the new paper when I found it in the Kilkenny Advertiser bin last week - a bit cheeky of them, that. Still, if they publish an odd pic of mine I'll continue to pick up a free copy now and again. As far as long-term survival goes, it all depends on how much ad revenue they get in - the KP and the KA get the bulk of that, but if the sales bloke is good, the rates reasonable and the readership verifiable, it might do ok.

Thought the quality of the paper looked great. Colour pictures which the KKP got rid of late.

Ten years ago I discussed with a journo friend the idea of a free newspaper in Kilkenny, I'd seen the Galway advertiser and thought it could work here. Anyway I quickly forgot about it as I continued to career from career to career, but it's funny to see that Kilkenny is on its third free paper now.

The future of the print media is bleak, the Reporter is really going to have to do something unique to survive in this small pool. There really is not a lot in it. It has only one hope and that is to wrestle business from the KPeople.

I like this newspaper, different style from the KP or the advertiser, some kind of random articles about a Czech boy and wallpapering, not too sure who its aimed at though, Hope it lasts for a while anyways!

I got it for the first time yesterday. I'm not into Andrew McGuinness's soapbox column and Jimmy Rhatigan is waffling about old people as usual but all in all, I like their whole 'optimistic news' buzz that they've got going on. Makes a change.

Is this paper still going. I live on patrick street and have never had it through my door. I got it once in esquires cafe and that was it. never seen it again;.

It's certainly still going as of last week - I haven't picked up this week's yet.

The problem with Kilkenny papers is they all follow the same boring format. News, courts, fashion, entertainment, property, agriculture and sport. None have the balls to try something more specialised. I wrote for some of them, and they all did the same thing. Kilkenny is far too small unless you can do something really special that will garner peoples attention.

I agree, the Advertiser is the best of them all, by a long shot.

Problem is, they all have to attract readers and in a local rag there's a limited number of ways of doing that.
Something more specialised might be restricted in readership so they all try to be all things to all men.

They can do the odd specialised thing by way of an insert - I haven't seen a pullout on classic cars yet (hint to any of them reading this).

I'm glad to see them getting out and about snapping or talking to folk, getting their names in. Their families buy it/pick it up, perhaps respond to ads.

Thing is, if they did the local stuff properly, you wouldn't mind. Courts, sport, events, arts and such are local news, but they don't even seem to talk to each other. You'd see the same press release badly re-written by two reporters in the same paper...do they ever get up and go out of the office at all or do they just sit and read their emails.

In the defence of the Kilkenny Reporter, Jimmy Rhatigan wrote an article (non dog or child based) last week in which he stated that the Reporter would not regurgitate press releases and would only write their own articles.

And to their credit, so far they've done just that.

I wasn't talking about the Reporter at all, but the Kilkenny People. It gets worse every week with the use of press releases. They are only short of including the contact details from the PR agency or political party that sends them.
They had a piece on the website yesterday that was full of grammatical and spelling errors. Does no one even read the pieces before they go public? No, Jimmy Rhatigan and Sean Hurley are nothing if not experienced journalists and they can actually use the English language correctly and well.

This week's Reporter seems to have its fair share of press releases.

I had a look at the news website 32.ie. I heard about it from a kid who was on it on the Danesfort run, but it seems to have no publicity at all. We'll see how long it lasts. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,092 ✭✭✭catbear

The website should in theory last longer as it does not have the overheads that paper does, printing and distribution.
The website may seem rough at the moment but as a news medium it is far more cost effective than the traditional print media.

www.kilkenny.32.ie seems to be keeping up to date with all the news etc, its handy to keep up to date with what is going on around in and around the locality. Lets hope it gets the support it deserves

Major kudos to Sean Hurley (I hope that's his name) for an extremely interesting and well written article in the Reporter this week about one of General Custer's right hand men, who hailed from Carlow/ Kilkenny.

He had another good article recently enough as well, can't remember what it was about though, I just remember enjoying reading it.

    So keep it up!

I wholeheartely agree. The Reporter has become my favourite Kilkenny paper of late, there's a really good mix of features and it has more unique articles than any of the other's. Despite Jimmy Rhatigan's ongoing obsessions with dogs and old people it's really quite good.
