A mate of mine has been in Revenue less than five years. His salary? Already north of 40.
And then there's the free degree they're paying for him to do too, of course.
When benchmarking is implemented in BOTH directions, I'll start listening to the whining of the public sector sinecurists and not before.
They should be working night and day to get people their passports, rather than unconstitutionally holding the public to ransom.
If they won't do the job, start sacking them.

No but I can use the published pay scales to verify if he is actually on 23k or if it's just a massaged (after-tax/mortgage) figure to garner sympathy. The only way he would be on 23k gross is if he was on the first step of the increment scale at the lowest level possible in the civil service (clerical officer). After 3-4 years without a promotion at that level, he would be on €26,500. Even a staff officer role, which still doesn't require any sort of third level qualification would have him starting on 35k gross.

this has been going on a year now.....the gov. calledtheir bluff.

    only they weren't bluffing.

even the media this morning weren't giving a fair crack to the union guy on RTE Radio 1---

its always about the public suffering never the employee-

i've some sympathyfor people queueing, not being able to go on hols.

some are genuine,i'd guess most just never bothered their ar$e to check theirpassports andnow there's uproar.

its not about passports its about the cost of labour and the systematic lowering of wages.

    its disgusting.

how much did we give the banks?

how much are the top 30 people in each bank earning a week??

prob 3 months dole .. EACH

not a word from the "outraged" public.

don't get me wrong i'm all for helping out--if its a 2way street, but its been proven some of these fcukers are on TEN times the average industrial wage...

and its the average industrial wage thats paying it!!!

    its disgusting and depressing.

i say to the ordinary joe's ... stick to your guns.

    don't give in.

Have you ever heard of paragraphs? Or are they banned in the public service as well? Those lazy overpaid workshy people in the passport offices should be sacked and their jobs given to those willing to do a proper days work.

So I have been doing a bit of reading here

    http://britishembassyinireland.fco.gov.uk/content/en/article/postie_passport_britsubjectdocs

and am I to understand that I am entitled to a British Passport because my Dad was born in April 1938 and my mam in April 1940??

    Really? Is it that easy?

I don't think so. You parents are entitled to be British subjects, but British subjects can't pass on their nationality. If your parents were British CITIZENS, then they could.

Most people with British passports today are British Citizens. Some others are British subjects such as some in ROI and, I believe, Hong Kong.

I applaud you honesty, most people are only interest in the PS now the country is struggling. There are still many who wouldn't want to do that sort of work.
Yes it is relatively secure employment with fair pay. But you are right it is very boring and monotonous work.... it certainly is not for everyone.

5 years down the line when the economy picks up, pen pushers (as people like to call them) will be back of the radar and back doing to the sort of job people are glad they are not doing.

I work in it and it pays the bills (just about) but i hope i am not still doing it in 10 years time.

So give the PS jobs to people who happily worked in the private sector during the boom but now want the PS jobs because they lost their own??

The jobs should stay with the people who got them when others either weren't interested or didn't get through the selection process.

Keep the passport office as a public sector department but ffs dock the employees their wages if they don't do the job they are paid to do. It IS theft, no matter how you look at it. If they can't accept that principle, go on full strike. I accept it is their right, I just don't think they have the gonads for it.

Its quite simple really, they shouldn't be paid overtime to clear the backlog they caused by not performing their duties.

In fact I'd argue they shouldn't be getting paid overtime anyway when there are plenty of people on the dole queue that could be hired temporarily to clear the backlog.

Its not like there is a labor shortage anymore. There is more people than work and its about time the government started behaving like this was the case.

If the employees don't want to train new workers to help them clear the backlog they can work the overtime for free.
