What's the story with the carpark?

It was roped off over the winter, now a big F*k#ff, very permanent-looking fence is in place. As the tourist numbers have started to increase and because of where it is situated, around corners and over the brow of a hill - it's like an accident waiting to happen. Tourists are parking all over the place to jump out and take the mandatory photo. A lot of the Galway daytrip busses stop also.

Seems crazy to have an iconic tourist photo-op so poorly served particularly with the state of the country.

Asked locally about this yesterday. The CP was never owned by the OPW and they were not willing to buy it from the landowner. There was a court decision which came down on the side of the landowner ( not sure who took the case).

The land owner wanted high celtic tiger prices they should just build a new one ond the castle side of the road. It would mean having to move out the sea wall but if it was redone in stone it should be nice.

In fairness, even with the carpark in place it was always an accident waiting to happen. Buses pulling in/out, carpark full, clueless rentals, tourists crossing main road without looking, worse posing in the center of the road with the castle in the background .

I agree that the situation is now worse, pretty disgracely IMO, however with some correct signage why can't the buses, rubberneckers, photograhers etc. drive the extra 400m to the Village and park where there is plenty of room and do the 2 min walk down to take photos, etc at the castle. Who knows they might even spend a shilling while they are at it.

They is talk of developing a coastal walk (off the roadside) from the Village to the Castle, even more reason to do so now.

you are not talking about the little pull it on the left as you are coming from Galway, are you?

part of the problem is that they don't realise its a mian road and beciuse they have just arrived in irelnad forget to look right.

its not in the interests of kinvara to have a carpark there. tourists take their picture and clear off without stopping in the village.

The OPW have nothing to do with Dunguaire castle; it is owned and run by Shannon Heritage afaik. I thought they owned the carpark aswell; certainly they were the ones having court injunctions issued when certain parties began to overnight there in caravans during the summer. This used to be quite a problem; added to which the number of accidents which used to happen there was unbelievable in the summer months also. I would have thought they fenced off the carpark in the interests of safety and to save themselves the hassle of it constantly being used as a campsite.
