Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There is a lot to read here and take in but after reading a few posts from all over the thread I think I might be able to make an informed suggestion.

All allowing undertaking is going to do is let us gloss over whats causing the undertaking in the first place.

It would make a lot more sense to educate everyone on how to ruddy drive rather then essentially make two wrongs right.

From where I stand, undertaking should not be allowed overall, however if the circumstances suit people shouldn't be given out to for undertaking on a 3 lane piece of road when you have other clowns causing it or if you have a two lane motorway with someone in the overtaking lane constantly at 100kph.

Its a silly idea. Its like all the alleged problems with the leaving cert, the courses are being taught by a lot of people who shouldnt be allowed in a class room so why should the leaving cert be dumbed down like it has been, or even gotten rid of to suit everyone in 2010 when the people of 1994 seemed to have better teachers?

All we are doing is brushing the bad things aside.

I'd slow to 90 before the other car and see whether the Garda dealt with them. Why bother undertaking in full view of a Garda car?
And if the Garda car slowed to 90 aswell? Would you continue on the rest of your journey at a reduced speed because you're unwilling to overtake the tool in the outer lane?

    Right:

1.) The General Bye-laws for the Controll of Traffic is from 1937.
there is no way that undertaking could have been alowed then - people where only getting used the the fact that cars existed.

2.) This law ^^ did not take into account modern roads - ie dual carrageways, 3 lane motorways, etc.

3.) At the time this law was made I am sure that there was a very good reason for NOT alowing undertaking.

4.) Roads and cars have changed a lot in the last 70 years - it is time the law changed to reflect this.

5.) To the people who say - I don't think it should be legal, but I do it - think about what you are saying.

Actually the legislation is from 1963 for over-taking on the left. The first dual-carriageway in the country was the Stillorgan DC, built in the 50s.

I remember years ago there were television adverts educating people how to merge from slip roads & how to use round abouts properly (off topic, I always thought they were to educate the large numbers of drivers who had licences but never sat tests). Every time I go near a motorway or dual carriage way I long for more of these adverts these days. Driving on motorways in Ireland truly depresses me. Its also highly frustrating making a driver error more possible
