Apologies, I didn't realise there that ITV HD had gone fulltime. Still, two swallows do not a summer make.

Why are people buying this rubbish if they already have satellite dishes installed ?

Just buy an Edison Argus Mini 2n1 or Ferguson Ariva HD combo box from saortv.com or satellite.ie. €150 and the receive BOTH the Digital Terrestrial TV stations (ie RTE etc) and the HD Satellite stations (including ITV and BBC HD) no problem.

Sure you can buy a cheap ass Freesat Box for less than a hundred.

    I dont get it.

Eitherway without a dish, Its only €49 for a 60cm dish with a quad lnb over the counter!

So that €200 all in! with RTEs etc PVR funtionality and HD stations actually working.

    False economy ?

Nope, that's FTV so I think it's UK only if I'm not mistaken.

And 150 for something that gives you RTE digital and Sat HD stations guaranteed as opposed to something that is a basic FTA box with a sat dish. (I think I would definetely spend the 30 euro more on the cheap HD combo boxes that are now available if I had a dish already!)

That 200 euro is for a semi decent bit of kit that does RTE/HD/Sat has up to 4 sat connections coming from the quad lnb dish as opposed to 1 on that Ross kit.

I sell neither so I am being objective. You would end up replacing this within a year. Why not save yourself the expense and get it right from the start. The 80 quid difference is nothing compared to the quality difference.

What kind of trouble are you having, I just spent the last 2 days getting mine up and running, turned out to be the elevation of the dish that was the problem, dishpointer website told me to put at 21 degrees but turned out that it needed to be pointed 18 degrees, made all the difference.... What seems to be the issue with your set up....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,117 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Ive mine up on the wall but cant get any signal.

I have 2 bars one is quality the other is Level. Level is at 99%. Quality is at 0%. Ive tried moving it around but i cant get anything at all in the quality bit.

Its at the same height and pointing the same direction as all the sky dishes along the row of houses. ive tried angles from 15 to 25 and still nothing. (dish pointer told me 20.9)

Should i just get a cheap sat finder or anyone have any tips.

    Grumpypants,

Not familiar with this particular system, but I've installed a few DIY systems now and after initial frustration this is my experience:
    - Set up satellite receiver and TV so you can clearly see TV when adjusting dish
    - In Dublin I've found that the dish has to be slightly forward of vertical (i.e. appears to be pointing slightly at the ground). It's not actually, just appears to be!
    - Use dishpointer.com to ascertain general direction dish should be pointing and skew on LNB
    - Make sure to select Astra 28.2 from satellite receiver menu, otherwise you can have a very strong signal but no picture as you're pointing at wrong satellite! Turns out there seems to be quite a few up there!
    - Select BBC1 or other channel on Astra 28.2 and bring up info page showing signal strength and quality
    - Slowly change direction of dish left or right. I generally start off west of 28.2 and have to turn dish east. Pause every couple of degrees. Picture should soon appear on TV
    - If obviously dish turned too far east adjust elevation (again, I've found in past I've had to point dish more towards the ground)
    - When you get a picture, adjust dish elevation slowly to get maximum signal strength and quality
    - Finally adjust LNB skew to maximise reception strength and quality

Tighten all nuts/bolts symmetrically on dish. Again found in past dish can go off angle as bolts tighten.

    HTH

Cheers for the tips. I was wondering about the pointing at the ground bit alright it does look that way. I kept trying and got some signal. It will go up to around 60% and then i press scan to look for the channels it will find some but then the signal drops to 0% again about 5 -10 seconds later it comes up to 50-60% again. But keeps dropping. I must be getting closer.

Same thing happened with me. Just move it very slightly and slowly and have someone at the tv on a phone telling you if the signal moves.

Ive lost astra 2 all together now :(. It is picking up a few others Astra 1, Telsar and something china8 but not the one i want.

Think i have the astra 2 one now. I was pointing at it but got nothing got pee'd off and twisted the LNB out of anger and hey presto 60% !! Tightened up the bolts and it was gone.

Thought i got it back to 42% but any attempts to adjust it a tiny bit results in loosing the signal.

Scanned for the channels loads started to load up but when i tried some it tells me channels like channel 4 are scrambled ? and its picking up sky movies ? Am i gone onto the wrong one again.

    Use this site:
    http://www.dishpointer.com/

Find you house using the google map. Pick the Astra 28.2E 2A,2B,2D. drop the marker as near to where your dish is. it will show a green line. That line shows the direction to point dish. Use a landmark or 2 is possible.

Yea was on that site. Its quite hard to work out land marks as the rest of the area around my house is just a building site on google maps. But i was able to guess the location enough to find Astra 2. But i can only get the signal if i twist the LND around 45 degree and at that i only get it up to 42% then it will keep coming and going.

I have a sat finder on order so when that comes hopefully it will let me fine tune it. Really need a second person spent around 5 hours today climbing up a ladder twisting it 1mm then back down check and repeat !!

There is an encrypted version of Channel 4 for the Republic of Ireland. You are pointing in the right direction though.

Reception problems should be fixed my moving the dish to the correct place. You will need to barely move it.

Yeah, only set up mine today. got a loan of a sat finder and it was invaluable. when you move the dish give the finder a second or two find the satellite.

No all i did was take the cable out of the sky box and straight into the new box. Switch it on and its ready to go. No need to go near the dish at all.

Is there anywhere these boxes can be got on their own to plug into my old sky system so?

Lots of people (me inlcuded) have no requirement for a combo box, so I'm not going to spend more to get stuff I don't want.

Can a HD sat receiver be had for less than €120?

Power City will sell for the online price if you ask them in store. So the answer to your previous question is yes you can get one for under €120, but if you want to do it as cheap as possible why not get the kit from B&Q and then sell the dish on adverts.ie to offset the cost.

I can't answer the specific question but the guys on the Satellite forum told me that not all dishes and LNBs are compatible with each other. Suggest you ask over there.

Once you've fulfilled the terms of the contract you signed up for, you can keep the equipment. e.g.12 months subscription to a package.

    Hi all,

Could anyone who's bought the Ross receiver help with me with a recording problem?

I've gone into the System Setting menu and set the record device to USB. The box is happy with the USB drive attached, I can record using the record button on the remote. I can't figure out how to schedule a timed recording though.

It vaguely mentions it in the manual but doesn't seem to tell you how to do it. The update only mentions channels and I don't want to overwrite the channel list that I have as it took ages and there might be channels missing.

Also, anyone figured out a way to save the channel/favourites setup to USB? It'd be handy to get it onto a PC, see if it can be worked on there.

Picked one up in B&Q Newry to-day for £67.15 , They had 15% off any purchase over £50 ,

Just upgraded the software and its very impressive , No Lip Sync issues like my BUSH Freesat HD Box.

I mounted the dish on my shed and now able to listen to RTE/BBC/Newstalk Radio via speakers in the Shed as well as 2 outdoor speakers (Nearest Neighbour is 400 yrds away).

Just bought this today in B&Q in Athlone. Was marked at €120 + 15% off today (€102) but it scanned at €85 with 15% off, so I paid €75 for it! There was tonnes there, used the self service till.

We have a Sky dish that has a three way LNB I guess (I dont know anything about satellites, but the dish has 3 coaxial cables coming from it) And we used to have Sky plus, but not anymore so I was able to plug the second coaxial from the Sky box into this, and it worked straight away!

I have to say i got this and im really dissapointed with it. The Ross box is slow and clunky. Its really not built for flicking around channels. I was putting a second box upstairs and picked up a SD freesat box in Maplin for 50 euro and its a million times better. Never looses channels has a full TV guide is very quick and responsive.

If anyone is just looking for a box to connect to a sky set up then id go with the Maplin one. Buying the HD box for the sake of a few world cup games isnt worth it as not much else is broadcast in HD.
