Our puppy who's almost 9 months has a bit of a limp in one of his hind legs. What are we supposed to do - wait a few days and see if it gets better or take him to the vetsb straight away? Our poor cat got sick last year and it turned out he had kidney failure and had to be pts :( so we're a bit paranoid about him getting sick etc. He's not crying or anything and was able to run around and play etc in the park as normal and seems his usual self? He was at daycare yesterday so I'm thinking he may have overdone it when he was running amok with his friends all day! He always takes it easy on a saturday because he's trired from being in daycare the day before so the leg will get a rest until we take him for his afternoon 20 min stroll later.

Leave it a couple of days and see. You could spend a lot on a vet to just tell you to let the dog rest. If the limp is still there on Monday then go to the vet.

I'd leave it until Monday and see how he does, as long as it doesn't seem really bad. He could just have pulled a muscle or something.

It might be a good idea to give the walk a total miss for today and just let him have a bit of a total rest on it.

My last cat died of kidney failure too and I do tend to worry too much about all my present lots ailments as well, so I can understand your worry!

Ring the vet and talk to him

What breed is your dog? The reason i ask is some giant breed, Great Danes, Saint bernards etc can suffer from a condition called "Pano" or other wise known as growing pains due to their large size.

It can just come on them and it just needs rest and they can get it reoccurring until they are fully matured.

Please dont walk or exercise the dog until the lameness has gone away as you could do more damage if there is already a problem there.
Complete rest is what the pup needs until the lameness goes away or until you bring it to the vet.

Had the same problem during the week. Don't know what happened but the dog just started limping and whining. Brought her to the vet to be on the safe side. If you had a pulled muscle, you wouldn't like the pain! She was fine today, 2 days after, so give your dog plenty of rest, no walking or jumping and bring her to the vet on monday if he's still limping.

My poor baba - we let him rest over the weekend and he seemed fine this morning so we thought he'd be ok for daycare (he was very nervous after being snapped at one morning by a small terrier so we've been taking him twice a week to socialize and play) but he seems really stiff this evening so I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow. He's a golden retriever and looking at forums etc pano is common with them like you suggested andreac - his parents had good hip scores and I've been really careful/strict about how much we walk him so hopefully it's not his hips. He'll be 9 months next week.

Here he is in the garden (the state of the walls lol! :pac:)

Oh sorry to hear about your dog still being lame. Def just keep resting it until you get to the vet.
Does she yelp if you manipulate the leg? Usually with Pano they dont feel any pain when you move the leg around.

He doesn't seem to be in any pain and lets us move his legs without any yelps etc.

Check the nail beds of the foot he is favouring. Try to look down as far as you can under the fur - it maybe a ruptured nail bed which they can damage when chasing balls etc. You'll see blood at the bottom of the nail - similar to your own if you hurt yourself.

He's going to the vets this evening to be safe! Again he seemed fine this morning maybe a slight limp but last night he didn't seem to be able to lift himself up - i brought in his water bowl and he wasn't bothered - normally he races over to it and drowns the place!

hey there - did you check his pads? i notice you have slabs where his kennel is, could be that he's split one? also a couple of times recently one of my lot has started to limp, whe i checked their paws i found small prickly twigs stuck in the pads, took them out and no problems

if it is a muscle strain try to keep him inside and quiet so he can rest properly

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,045 ✭✭✭✭tk123

The vet reckons he's pulled/strained a muscle so he's on anti-inflams. and has to rest. If he doesn't get better he'll have to get xrays done but the vet doesn't think he'll need it because everthing feels fine. No walks until Sunday(!). I'll have to skip breakfast lol - he lies beside me at breakfast time because he knows his walk is next!
He's meant to be going to his obidience club tomorrow - do you think he'll be ok for this as long as we're not running around?

I'd skip it all it takes if for him to get riled up and hop on the leg to make it worse

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,045 ✭✭✭✭tk123

:( Aww I thought he'd be ok for it? He''ll get just as riled up when I get home from work today!

No, deffo no classes or exercise of any kind. Just being at the classes would be enough to tire the pup out and his leg would suffer even more.

The pup needs complete rest so i would make sure its on a lead even going out into the garden for the toilet.

The vet has advised complete rest so i would make sure that the pup gets this until its fully recovered as any exercise could hinder the leg getting better.

Mine has this, I checked this morning. I'm assuming a trip to the vet?

I'm no veterinarian, but i'm pretty sure it's because he's got a build up of love in his leg. Some light hugging should release it.

Yeah I'd agree with skipping class & walk.
My pup hurt herself, leaping off the couch n landed & jarred her shoulder, she was sore so I brought her to the vets and he told me not to let her be jumping around/go for a walk for a while because the anti inflams will remove the pain that might stop them doing something like jumping or whatever. And then they think they're ok and will just do further damage. Especially as he's a pup, you don't want to cause any damage to growing joints.

Hard I know but best to keep him less jumpy/over excited.

spottyelephant I suggest you have a think before you post again. Helpful posts next time please.

Oh c'mon! I read the thread, figured there was enough good advice so thought i'd lighten it up a bit!

I'll leave now so, OP hope the doggy gets sorted.

I don't mind light hearted posts. But you've never posted in this forum before, and some people don't appreciate jokes when their animal is unwell.
Anyway - we'll leave it there.

vets in this country are ****. my puppy is limping since he is 4 months old. 5 months its going on. vets charge me put him on anti-inflamitorys, i'm putting deep heat on his lump, poitín being rubbed in. they took x-rays at christmas and they done nothing about it so now i have to bring him to a specialist who's charging €300 for consultation and x-rays because the other xrays were done to long ago. no1 will drain the fluid from his joint in case it gets infected! i'm at the end of my tether and so upset looking at a puppy limping for so long. sorry for the rant but basically dont go to a vet. go to a specialist. your only going to get charged for **** talk

Thanks guys - we'll give it a miss and maybe practice his focus/leave/take from the comfort of his big cushion! :)

If the dog is limping, then yeah - you'll probably need to go alright, as it might be infected.

I think I might start giving our guy supplements/fish oils for his joints - there was a thread a while back about them I think? Better safe than sorry especially since he's a GR. He'll eat anything so no probs getting him to take them! :D

I recommend Salmon Oil, i use it on my rottie and hes in great condition and its really good for their coat and skin too and general well being.

cod liver oil or even a tin of sardines. my 2 usually share a tin of sardines mixed with their dry nuts and it gives the coat a nice shine too. what breed is he?
