Yup. He goes towards Fabregas, doesn't actually challenge for the ball but does get his body in the way of a shot 3 yards out. Penalty and red.

I don't get this. Maybe i'm just being thick? but when a defender manages to get his body between the attacker and the ball, and the ball is within playing distance of the defender, my understanding is that that's not a foul. It wasn't like Puyol stuck a leg out to block Fabregas' foot, he got his whole body between Fab and the ball. The way I see it Puyol had won possession of the ball - by positioning himself in front of it - and then Cesc kicked him.

Yeah exactly. I completely agree. I just can't see how the ref couldn't give a penalty.

Do most people agree or is there something I'm missing?

    I think you're right.

Puyol denies a clear scoring opportunity, even if he did act innocent, I don't see why or how he could appeal it.

Fabregas showed maturity beyond his years tonight, carrying on through injury, and after the yellow, how many players would have lost their heads and gotten sent off. Scoring the penalty was by no means an easy task.

I think ibra and Bendtner are two players bound to draw comparison. Both are tall (6'4,6'5) strikers, both are Scandinavean, both were playing on opposing teams tonight!!!

Oh and what is wrong with a Sig of one of the hottest prospects in world football.

But he only ended up in front of Fab when the ball was gone and to get there he ran through Fabregas. That is the problem and why it was a penalty.

No problem if you are in a straight race with a player and you get your body in front of him but you can't go through a player and impede his shot to get yourself there.

Balotelli? certainly has the potential to be the next Cassano alright

If you fail to see the difference between Ibra and Bednter then fair enough, if you also fail to see the difference between Eto'o and Ibra, i wish you luck also

I don't fail to see the difference but they are certainly comparable. As far as Etoo and Ibra never in a million years would I pay 40 million + E'too for Ibra.

As far as Balotelli goes he might have a bad attitude but he is a top footballer, just needs to get out of Italy.

He should have gone off, if he exacerbated his injury after the penalty was scored by coming back on when he was plainly unable to even walk properly then hes a fool and his actions were the opposite of mature IMO. Theres still a Premiership to be fought for.

I think describing him as a rich man's Bendtner is a perfect description tbh. They're both tall strikers that can bring the ball down out of the air with ease and link up play....and miss a shed load of easy chances before scoring a few. Ibra is obviously better but it's not a million miles

no it actually is a million miles, its more in fact

Ibra does far more then he is given credit for on here

he score plenty of goals, he started this season in record breaking form, he had a ****e december, ok january and february, just getting back into the groove so to speak, and is now back playing and scoring at a high level

he has been doing it for year after year now, Bednter will never be near him in terms of ability or class

I get it, i do, we like strikers who will run around the putch for 70 minutes or so like a headless chicken and chase every lost cause

we dont like strikers who can turn a game in an instant with a flick or a touch that only few players in the world are capable of, sure they dont track back do they, no good at all

Why do you think that? Did Puyol not run into Fabregas and impede him?

You have to watch Puyol's position from when the cross came in. If he was standing directly behind and Fabregas turned into him, I would agree. But he is nowhere near Fabregas and he sprints from a few yards away and impedes the player.

That's stupid Kryo, every appeal has to be looked at on it's own, that shouldn't of been a red card, and if it's appealed it should and will be overturned.

Now I can't fully remember the Fletcher one, was it a straight red?

there is a thing called precident

Fletcher last year, in the semi final was given a straight red when he had clearly got to the ball

Puyol ran into the back of Fabregas, didnt get near the ball

if you cant find evidence to overtutn scenario A you must show consistency and not overturn scenario B

Well for me he doesn't impede the player,

Puyol is getting close to the player to make a legitimate challenge, but it's fabregas' own movement that causes the collision, it's his swipe at the ball that results in the leg tangle, that's my view of it, Puyol didn't make a challenge for me.

If they win next week they have a better chance of winning the CL than the premiership, him staying on helped that. He must have known he could play through the pain without making it worse. It's a question of weighing up the rewards of him potentially being in a position to score a winning goal, over the risk of missing the game at the weekend, which mighn't even matter anymore.

Mayordenis, whatever about your opinion of it not being a penalty or red (which is quite baffling considering the luxurious benefit of replays) do you honestly think it will be rescinded given what happened Fletcher last year?

But you have to give someone room to move their leg back and take a shot. Fab starts to move his foot back and Puyol is nowhere until he sprints forward into the exact location where Fab is about to shoot. I believe that you can see Puyol leaning into Fabregas but he does it slyly with his hands up so it will look like he has done nothing wrong.

Bottom line is that Puyol sprints towards Fabregas, gets nowhere near the ball but stops Fabregas moving his foot forward to take the shot.

    Peno.
