Did they even check the till? Sometimes what can happen is you think you were given a fiver/tenner, put it in the till, hand over incorrect change and its an honest mistake. However if it was an honest mistake then there would usually be a fifty euro note in the fiver or tenner slot in the till. If this is the case then you know as a bar person you made a mistake.

Its very easy surprisingly enough to make the mistake on tenners and fiftys when it is manic busy

Has anyone been in the new look Armchair Bar at Revolution? I went in yesterday for a quick pint with a friend and was amazed at the transformation. Plenty of craft beer on offer (I went in purely for Metalman), great music and beautiful old furniture. I hope it does well because it's usurped Geoff's for my catch-up venue!

Where is it? The main part of Revolution?

I am disgusted. Just handed over €50 for a pint in shorrts. Bar woman handed back change looked at it and she gave me €5 plus coin. Looked up and she was gone. Called a barman who said I made a mistake, was drunk and falling around the place. Was my second pint of the night. Disgusted. Spoke to who I claimed to be the manager and said nothing can be done. My favorite place in town but will never return.

Did you get your cash back off them ?

I'm sorry but did you post this when you were still in shortts? No offence, but who gets shortchanged & whips out the phone to go on boards in the middle of a pub on a night out?

Back on topic, this happened me in a well known spot one night a few years ago. After having words with the barman & after refusing to move away from the bar I got escorted out the door by 2 bouncers but I had the guards in at the bar within 5 minutes asking to see the CCTV. Before they even finished asking the manager I had my money back in my hand.

Similar issue happened a mate of mine in a petrol station recently and these guys are currently helping out with it.

Obviously you don't remember the Pulpit 5,who embezzled 70k pounds (that they know of) from the bar and an unknown amount from customers, over a 12 month period. At the time the pulpit did not issue receipt's with drinks orders which in turn enabled the con. It was only uncovered at the end of year accounts and then with the use of concealed cameras the 5 were identified
Now not all staff are corrupt, in fact most are not. but part time staff would have less loyalty to bar and customers.
You should always ask for a receipt as is shows amount tendered and change given and the transaction is recorded.
How many times have we just taken the change, shoved it in our pockets without checking because we had a round of drinks to carry, put the wrong person behind the bar and they will take advantage of the situation.
I am not suggesting this happened in this case, but these things happen.

think as you may!!! i have my opinion you have yours!! do you know the barperson involved in blatantly robbing a person of there hard earned cash???i'll admit i'm speculating but whats to say the barperson aint doing it the whole time?? and i frequent the bars in this city often enough dropping some of my hard earned cash in there tils but shortts or even crystal would'nt be a spot i'd go thankfully

I would be very surprised if they do not have Till Scan, this system when used in conjunction with camera's can show what drinks were served and what was clocked into the till.I would go in and ask them if they have this system in place.

I'm not suggesting these things don't happen but they don't happen as often as some people make out. Why? Because it's easier for staff to steal from the business than a customer and if someone is robbing, that's what they'll do in my experience. What research have you done to show part-time staff are less loyal? You're just feeding the ridiculous and ignorant accusations being thrown about here. If you're going to bring irrelevant anecdotes into this maybe I should mention the countless times I've caught customers trying to rob or run off without paying or who short-changed me?

I couldn't say if I know the person you are publicly accusing of stealing, but it's unlikely I do. What's to say your hard-earned cash is exactly that, what's to say you aren't on the rob the whole time?

I don't have an opinion, I have facts based on almost 14 years of working in bars/clubs in this city up to management level and as a customer too.

That said, if the manager in Shortt's did say there was nothing they could do, that's bull****. There are several courses of action that could be taken including the ones already mentioned.

There's also very little point in going to a consumer agency except maybe to name & shame. There is no legal requirement to actually give change to a customer although for obvious reasons everywhere does.

have you got your money back yet? used to work in a nightclub in town, happens quite alot, normally the managers would (should) tell you to come back at the end of the night so they can count the tills and if you are correct they will have extra money and will hand it back... but if the barperson stole it, she would be caught on camera, although she would have been stealing your money not the businesses(your change), so its upto you to get the police or whoever you like involved, as the manager might just be protecting his employee.

him saying nothing can be done is him blatently trying to cover it up IMO, as their is alot that can be done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

I think its more likely the manager said nothing can be done right now, which may be accurate if he is unable to go and check it out there and then, he can check cameras, check tills at the end of the night no problem like.

Maybe Im wrong, just speaking from experience

In the last year I find the nightlife in waterford at the weekend just dire and even more dire when the forum closes, a few years ago when twister vicks and electric avenue were open there would always be different bands and different tribute acts every weekend always something different and something fresh to see, the weekend these days its just the same local bands playing every weekend in the venues most people go to be it lebowski or avalon or propeller palms or mad ferrit and its almost the exact same line up of songs you can expect to hear each time, after a while its just gets boring and stale to be subjected to the same local music bands every weekend.

When the forum got different bands to play at their venue over the years be it a tribute band or some band touring always better and more refreshing to see something different although there were different nights there should of been more of a crowd there, one thing I always liked and respected about the forum was the fact they always had a limit on the numbers they would leave into their venue on the busy nights be it smash hits or christmas nights might be busy inside but still plenty of space to move around.

Most of the late night bars and nightclubs downtown are way overcrowded most weekends trying to watch and enjoy a gig in shorrts and always people bumping into you and very hard to move when I was in the reg on a saturday night very overcrowded and very tense atmosphere I could feel in the air it was that overcrowded I don,t know why most places can,t regulate the numbers they leave in.

Then there is the nightlife in tramore before christmas myself and some friends went to tramore for night out instead of waterford most of the pubs out there were grand, about half 12 tried to get into murphys for a drink they had stopped serving was informed that the slip inn and the venue were the only late night venues open late in tramore to go to when we tried to go into these places they were both lock ins at half 12 it seemed to be locals only and wouldn,t leave anyone else in and I don,t think they were overfull must of been about 12 to 14 people turned away, then trying to get a taxi back into waterford from the taxi rank in tramore we were told we couldn,t get one into waterford despite being willing to pay the taxi fee, was informed the taxi rank had only 4 taxis on the go in tramore on a saturday night bad taxi service at hand, anytime when I was ever out in tramore a few yrs ago there was never any bother getting a taxi back into waterford after a night out, so between the nightlife in both waterford and tramore at the present moment both are just very dire in my view I can understand why some people would prefer to stay in and have house sessions at the weekends rather then going out.

I'm not sure if he's still in the business, and if it's relevant for this thread, but I see that Mr. Darryl Kavanagh has applied for bankruptcy in the United States.

He's down the foodchain a bit compared to some of the other high profile developers going through this process at the moment, but it's still a frightening array of outstanding debts which this chap has, and to a number of different institutions.

It's a bit of a slippery move to move abroad when you know that your days are numbered and apply for bankruptcy outside of Ireland. Interesting to see if he can get away with it, and even more interesting to see what sort of an income allowance he is provided with. You can be sure he isn't on the breadline anyway.

Dignity people opening a new bar complete with new name by March. Won't be a gay bar as such, nothing given away on their Facebook as to the new location if there is to be one.

And with regards to the Reg...I never said it was for sale...just that if you had a couple of million, you could buy it now. I don't think that venue will be appearing on property websites anytime soon.

I went to Metal Fest in the Forum last night. A really classy and well run event by a great gang of young people working hard to bring live Metal back to Waterford. Hats off to all involved.
