The football sounds like it could have been brilliant fun! We could have organised a game against the Kilkenny/ Tipperary boardsies and had a right knees up afterwards!

In all seriousness, how about starting out in Downes or Uisce Beatha and ending up in The Reg with a couple of pubs in between.

Think I remember the soccer thing starting turning into a non boardsie thing

It did eventually turn into a non boardsie thing but the first season that they played in the night owls it was nearly all boards lads which I thought was impressive considering it was just the Waterford board playing.

I used to train with them (essentially just a game of ball during the week) but played for a different team at the time. Was a sound bunch of lads

Whilst a nice idea I would say you will struggle to get people to this unfortunately. There hasn't been a mention of a Waterford boards meetup in years and not everyone would even be reading this thread so it would likely need a new thread of it's own set up earlier to see if there's any interest. I'm not around myself.

Sorry to hear that lassykk, if anyone is interested I'm easy for either tonight or tomorrow night, it would be great to meet you all!

Looks like the Candy Store in Johns Park is closing for a "undefined period".

I’d like to give as little shout-out to the Riverside Cottage on the Dunmore Road. Went in for lunch today and was very impressed - good food which I suppose is a non-starter as far as good reviews go, but also the staff were absolutely superb.

    Delighted to recommend it.

Long shot, but anyone know of any pubs/venues re-opening soon that still plan to host live music or DJs when they do?

unclear atm with places only announcing there opening back up under the new rules etc for the next 3 weeks and then pubs opening on the 20th July

Cant see the harm in having music in places. The government leaders think it would cause groups of people standing in the same area, dancing and all that

The whole situation is ridiculous. So im safer if i have a meal instead of just having a pint.

I wonder how some places are going to survive esp in a possible upcoming economic downfall

week nights even in times before covid some pubs in the town all the way up to Johnstown would be dead (Gradys yard, Revs, Kazbar, Gingerman to name a few), Student places would be busy but thats only for the college year. Places might be busy for an odd match or public holiday (Pre/post Christmas, Easter, Halloween etc)

Should an envective be set up by city centre publicans to help improve mid week business. Cheap pints/dinners etc

Nightlife / pub culture as we know it is gone forever.

Setting up an executive to support a few pub owners sounds fanciful.

They deserve no more support than any small business struggling.

    Innovate & adapt.

Probably not worst cultural paradigm shift to stop turfing a few thousand pissed up punters onto John at 2.30 AM as a society either way.

Forget the night...."Life" as we know it has changed forever with arrival The Elephant in the Room aka Covid Corona!:pac:

The sundown decline started with the smoking ban, then was eroded further with the last recession, continued with strict drink driving/blood alcohol levels, cheaper off licence prices and the general population aspiring for a more healthier lifestyle.

The 90's were the last great period of night's out in Waterford IMO. The place used to be jointed. A lot more pubs. Heaps of different discos. Different times for sure but today's youth would be shocked at how vibrant the scene was up to that point in time. It did continue for the Celtic Tiger years but those were more extravagant times.

Remember these names??... The Bridge/Breens, Metroland, The Roxy, Bank Bar, T+H's, The Forum, Egans, Flow Motion/Flare, Rebel Yell, Cant Stop, Man Fridays, Shakedown, The Olde Stand, Bobby McGee's, The (original) Olde Rogue, Club LA, Sheffs and out in Tramore, South.

Suppose it was the end of an era for some of us but growing up in those years made the town a very special place to socialise in. I have some great memories to treasure.

Great post and great memories from all those spots!

Couple of £4 bottles of MD 20/20 in Breens followed by the supper before running the gauntlet of getting back down O’Connell street without getting into a row at 3 in the morning :D

Wasant Temple Bar turned into a polish bar before it closed ? Obv That was a different Davy Macs then the one today ?

Grew up at the wrong time (turned 18 in 2008) and missed all the great places

I can vaguely remember A kentucky chipper down in O Connell Street (think the building itself is still intact ?)

this came out of the blue and great to see, not sure how it will work

Yeah imagine going out and meeting yer mates without the need or use of a phone? It was just a "I'll meet ya in XYZ @ 7 o'clock" etc. If they weren't in that particular pub you would just have to go to the next place. Crazy thing is we are only talking about a period less than 20 years ago. Plus having no phone meant you had to talk & socialise. A lot of today's youth will (or do) have a serious lack of social skills. Rather than taking a pic of a pint or a plate of food and posting or sharing it on some "social" platform why not just enjoy the real experience?

Think one the social media apps allows you to see what pub/nightclub a person is in through the map features
