Interesting. How much rhianna etc was played?

I'd say from 1 till about 1:20 it was all Rihanna and her genre. We went there so we would not have to listen to this kind of music so after 20mins we left and went to the Front Lounge. :(

    That's a shame.

I took a look at the Shortt's Facebook page. Everything is fine and dandy until I come across "Located in the heart of John Street Village".

WTF is "John Street Village"? Its a fvcking street, not a village. Hence the term "John Street". There is a Johnstown area, but there ain't no village. The area is all within Norman Extention. The only village that can be claimed within the city environs is Ballygunner.

I really hate this "John Street Village" term. I remember coming across it about 3 years ago, and thought it a really crap marketing way to feed off Greenwich Village in New York. We ain't New York. Why must we try be a lesser imitation of other cities? Its just like when Bob Tweedy tried refer to the area as 'the strip' as though we are Ibiza. It just reeks of style over substance.

The area is John Street. I can handle old timers calling it the traffic lights or the car stand (down at the corner), but it certainly ain't a village.

Yeah it's just one of those things that the City Council have asked bars to do..almost create a Temple Bar type of area that will appeal to visitors.

I wouldn't get too hung up on it...it's just a name.

OK, i'm overreacting a bit, but I think it makes the whole area sound cheap.

Viking Triangle is grand, because the Viking part of the city looked like a triangle. Or they could call it the Apple Market area. But this makes it look like we are trying to be cool. Nothing is more uncool than trying to be cool.

John's Street Village. I'd happily put up with that name.

Better than that "Strip" as it became known around the time of that Sunday World article on the Pulpit and the clientele being dropped off in their Daddy's BMW's - like any of our Daddy's had them - we were lucky if they had a Ford Escort in those days (late 80's'/ early 90's - pre Tiger days)

Wonder if the owner at the time wrote that article.

Funnily enough the place went downhill after that.

So what kind of place is shorts and crystal? The playlist that Darren suggested would appeal to me anyway but I assume that doesn't carry over to the night club?

Why does it need a new name at all? What's wrong with the apple market, or John St.

If we can't be cool on our own account, we certainly won't be cool by trying to sponge cool points from Greenwich Village.

BTW, I do think "The Car Stand" would be a good name for The Foundry or Oxygen. It would combine local history with the apparent randomness needed for names of nightclubs.

On the topic of names, I understand why Shortt's is called that (its the name of the owner), and the Front Lounge has a logic (it makes me think its a bar with plenty of seats, though it makes me wonder where the back lounge is).

But where did Harveys and Mason's get their names? Did they just pick random surnames from the East Wiltshire phone directory?

I was talking in relative terms - totally agree with you.

On the other hand it is good to see so many new places opening up and investors having the confidence in the City.

I definitely agree with that. I know we mightn't get the numbers going out that we did 3 years ago, but in my view there is far more to go out for now.

And that's how long it's been since I was out - but am getting a longing to correct that with all these new places opening.

Waterford now has a chance, if the Publicans get it right this time around, to put us firmly on the map again as a vibrant city.

And by that I mean giving the punters value and not ripping them off at every opportunity

Well, I think after the visitors we get for Tall Ships, 50c, and Spraoi, the word will spread. WIT might even get more applications next year on account of it.

Fingers crossed, but looking around last night it was very, very quiet, and it is great to see all the new venues open and a busy summer to, How many venues are doing live bands?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

The KaZbar, front lounge, shorts, masons, woodman select bar (wherever they got the select from) all doing live bands now. That's not to mention the likes of the pubs off the beaten track who are getting in bands now.

There's probably more choice now for those going out than there has been in a very long time!

It's actually kinda funny the direction this thread has taken. In the midst of rubys closing down we literally had nowhere to go on a saturday night outside our side of Harveys/Masons.

It's a great change. I don't think everyone will last I just don't see how they could but it's nice to have a bit of buzz about.

I wonder will crystal make the same mistake of the foundry and go down the "Celtic tiger" pricing route.

I wouldn't say so. I expect they've learned from others mistakes.

Remember property/rent is a huge overhead, and that has been slashed for the newcomers.

Pub prices is a subjective term though, what I might call a pub price living in the county Is going to be a far cry from somebody in the middle of dublin ya know?

Under a fiver a drink is what I'd consider pub prices.

Or less choice if your not into live bands ;)

Is that Crystal place open yet? I assumed it would open the same time as Shortts bar?

Club will be open in about 2/3 weeks. Be open by Tall Ships anyway.

Actually...on the subject of live music.

I think it's slowly but surely dying. Venues are massively cutting back on their budgets so we're seeing less and less 4 and 5 pieces and more and more 2 pieces. Masons are the only ones who are sustaining the big bands, but to many people, those bands are too big (and costing up to 1k and sometimes more).

Some people open up venues with intentions of showcasing live talent...it's only when they see the lack of crowds, and when they try to balance the books...that they see that live music is no longer a viable entertainment offering in this town. Which is a shame.

theres loads of places playing bands, just because the cover bands that play in masons arent from waterford and play in more areas in the country doesn't necessarily mean they are bigger or better.
from what i understand you seem to know a good bit of what goes on behind closed doors as regards pubs and clubs etc. why would you pay big money to hire bands from outside of waterford when waterford bands could do the job just as well for less? at the end of the day a cover band is a cover band, anybody can emulate other peoples material (to a certain extent)
is there a standard charge on most bands say that play in masons or do certain bands charge more?

not really i think, if you put lets say avalon on in harveys on a wed night and have blue moose or big generator on in masons most students will go to masons to see what they will consider to be a bigger band just seems to be the case for the last 4 - 5 years, the jam tarts always pull a crowd but you cant have them every night
