Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What could be the cause of brakes squeling?
This has been happenign for a while on my 02 focus.
Ive mainly noticed it when i start the car initially and for the first 15 mins, maybe longer, it dosent happen all the time, it appears random.

I got a full service last week and the front brake pads changed, I thought
this would have stopped it but it hasnt.

    any ideas?

    cheers

You have cheap brake pads fitted that have no anti squeal backing on them. a short term work around is to apply copper grease where the pads touch the brake caliper. Make sure not to get the grease on the braking face.

Any pads with no anti squeel backing or copper grease are likley to squeel, regardless of brands although some are worse the others.

Get the garage to remove them and put some copper grease on them and you should be fine assuming they properly inspected the disks for wear before they just fitted pads.

    Try bedding the brakes.

From a speed of 60mph, gently apply the brakes a couple of times to bring them up to operating temperature. This prevents you from thermally shocking the rotors and pads in the next steps.

Make a series of eight near-stops from 60 to about 10 mph. Do it HARD by pressing the brakes firmly, but do not lock the wheels or engage ABS. At the end of each slowdown, immediately accelerate back to 60mph and then apply the brakes again. DO NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP! If you stop completely and sit there with your foot on the brake pedal, you will imprint pad material onto the hot rotors, which could lead to vibration, uneven braking, and even ruin the rotors.

The brakes may begin to fade after the 7th or 8th near-stop. This fade will stabilize, but not completely go away until the brakes have fully cooled. A strong smell from the brakes, and even smoke, is normal.

After the 8th near-stop, accelerate back up to speed and cruise for a while, using the brakes as little as possible. The brakes need about 5 minutes to cool down. Try not to become trapped in traffic or come to a complete stop while the brakes are still very hot.

An excellent guide on how to glaze your new pads and vastly reduce their performance there.

New brake pads create a good bit of dust at the start, my advice is to power wash the wheels with just water, and see how ya go from there.

Also if the back brakes are shoes instead of pads, dust collects within the drum and causes this too.
