Extractor fan- advice for best product?

    Hi all,

I have a bathroom with a great power shower. Only problem is the mould- we have a lot of mould above the window and on the inside of the window. After a shower the bathroom remains quite wet.

I am considering getting a better extractor fan. The current one is a standard Woodies style extractor, fitted by our electrician.

Can anyone recommend a good extractor fan?

    Thanks.

check to see if your extractor fan is working first. any smnall bit of circulation will help mould. after your shower open the window or even leave the door ajar.

the fan might not be strong enough to blow condensation out if the room is " sealed" ( as in door and window closed.

but with one open you are allowing the air to circulate more freely

The biggest misunderstanding of extractor fans is they actually need to have a source of air. In otherwords they need to have a supply of air coming in to extract out. As mentioned above.

The simpleist way to ensure this is make sure there is a gap in the bottom of your bathroom door. Not to big but not to small and stop piling your towels on fromt of this to keep the draft out :)

Mould... The problem with mould is that once it starts... It needs to be killed. I usually use a specialist mould resistant paint.

There is a formula for working out the amount of air changes in a bathroom but tbh I stopped using it long ago.

Just insure the gap is there.

Just to add to the good advice Joey pointed out about the gap under the door, Someone on boards I think had same problem as the OP. They cut a hole in door to make it like a vent, so they had continous air flow going through...

That was a house I was in. :) It was the solution i saw. I thought it good. But the easier one and the more attractive on is to cut a little more off the door. That way it cannot be noticed as much on the 6 panel doors.

Hi I had a similar problem the extractor fan in the ceiling was very weak in our en-suite I replaced it with a vortice lineo 100 T directly over the shower with one of those vents with a light in it and the change was great before the mirror was steamed up now its totally clear when i get out of the shower, its also hard to see moisture droplets in the air where before you could see it clearly
the fan is also very quiet, its mounted in the attic
very happy with it and replaced the fan in the main bathroom with another vortice fan :):)

My preferred solution is a humidistat controlled extractor fan instead of one that just works when the light is on. I have them in both the main bathroom and en-suite. When it detects the humidity reaching the level you set, the fan turns on and stays on until the humidity has been reduced.

There is a nice delay between having a shower and it coming on so you usually can get out of the shower while the warm fug is still there then the fan comes on shortly after you are out of there.

With the en-suite, I just push the door mostly shut so it is slightly ajar, and the suction from the fan holds it there and the slight gap round the door lets air in.

The other benefit is you don't get the fan coming on every time the light is turned on, it only functions when it is needed.

You don't seriously think you could purchase such an advanced product here in Ireland do you? ;)

I don't know, I bought mine on the Internet from a Uk supplier. Can't remember if it was this one but it's the same item:

I have bought stuff from TLC so they do/used to ship here.
