Bike vs. car collision (31/03/10)

    Hi,

    My bad.

I hit a car today. I was cycling along the outside of two lanes of static traffic to position myself at the top of the junction. I was on the 'wrong' side of the road. No oncoming traffic. I didn't see a car coming from the side road on my left and turning right. He was looking left for oncoming traffic, not right for overtaking traffic. I saw him, hit the brakes and slowly bumped/ banged his wheel arch. I don't think he saw me until I hit him.

It was an ultra slow collision. No harm to me, passenger or trike. To be honest, I've generated greater impacts by slamming the brakes too hard. It gave him a shock though. So, if you're out there, sorry about that.

He was good enough to pull over and come back and see if I was okay.

Go stand in the corner for 5mins and think about what a bad person you've been.

You've given us all a bad name ... as cyclists, we are bound by the rules of the cult to never ever accept blame.

But good to see everything turned out OK.

How many passengers can you get on the trike? You got any pics of it, I'm curious.

    James,

'Stephanie' is set up to carry two kids. Here's a picture I posted before:

The two children sit at the back of the box, on a collapsable fabric seat. In the picture, they sit where the bread, chicken and sparkling water is.

Here's another picture I posted previously, just to give some perspective on the trike:

The other bike is my tourer.

    Thanks for asking.

Hmm, is that a removable front panel? For carrying ladders?

And why does the hacker in me want to make an aero front for that?...

    Ah, here we go...

Can full size people fit in the front? Would be great for going to the pub!

Full size people can fit. I'd say one is the max though. The manufacturers recommend a maximum carried weight of 100KG.

Here's a picture of two adults in one, though definitely only for the photo shoot. http://www.christianiabikes.com/images/websidebilleder/bryllup5.australien_.jpg

No, it's not removable. Even if you crash into a wheel arch ;). There's an option to have a door at the front, but I didn't go for it.

I think I'll need some chicken wire and paper mache ;)

And they allow you to cycle around Tesco in this??

Yes I was also wondering why everything is loose in there and not bagged. It looks like a pedal powered shopping trolley!

    Sorry DFD*

I can never bag the bloody stuff as fast as they can scan it. So it just gets swept back into the trolley and then into 'Stephanie'. Having it all loose is handy for co-ordinated packing too.... heaviest stuff over the axles and all that kind of thing.

That you DFD? Saw the pic at the bottom of the Christiania page. http://www.velorution.biz/2009/08/when-lance-tweets/

How much does the steel or aluminium one weigh?

That's us. I have the steel one. You can find more details here, though there's no reference to it's weight.

For some reason the number '30KG' comes to mind, though I'm not sure. TBH the weight is a moot point. It spends its time transporting heavy(ish) things anyway, so........ Anyway, it rides very nicely laden or unladen, is very maneuverable in traffic and I'm always first off the lights (no need to track stand or put foot down). And the kids love it!

I witnessed a similar crash in Dublin 2 this afternoon. A lad on a bike cycling between two lanes of stationary traffic, suddenly the bike stops and tips forward and he was thrown over the handle bars - presumably something caught in his front wheel. Him and bike were only brought to a halt by a conveniently postioned taxi (not mine!). Taxi driver didn't seem too upset, only rolled down his window to straighten his side mirror. And surprisingly the cyclist didn't seem too bad either despite having landed on his face.

As a utility cyclist and nothing else, this is the only bike I've ever seen on boards that I covet.
