Probably not the cheapest but amazon have a great deal on their elite console.

For roughly 200 sterling, you get an elite console with either a gamepad and batman/pure or 2 games of your choice (would recommend mass effect 2 and bioshock 2).

    Go here: http://tinyurl.com/yjkb33e

If you use supersaver delivery it will arrive, as long as you're in the republic, usually within 2 working days - did for me anyway. It is actually slower to mainland UK as they use a 4-5 working day service so why pay for a faster one.

If you want a cheaper option get an xbox arcade and 2x 16gb pen drives. Apparently next week they are releasing an update that allows you to use 2 pen drives as storage giving you up to 32GB of save space.

However, the elites are far more reliable units.

Shouldn't be any difference in the quality of an Arcade unit and a Elite version.
The new~ish Arcade units even have HDMI ports.

HMV (in Swords anywho) have the new arcade units for 140euro on their own. When the update comes which will allow yea use USB sticks are storage devices yea will just need a 4-8gb usb stick to keep game addons and the like.

There shouldn't be but there is. Arcades still use an older version of the chipset that had HDMI support added and still tends to pack in after about 18 months. The new jasper chipset in the new elites are a lot quieter and they also run on a lower voltage and use less power than the other models - the power supply is also different.

Also, as far as I know they've as good as discontinued the arcade models and what is being sold is the last of the stock.

That isn't the case as the latest Arcade units (the one I got was from Sep. 09) is also using the Jasper hardware. That's 65nm for both the CPU and GPU.
PSU is the same as the latest Elite models.

Ok, Fair Enough then. But still, by the time you buy a pen drive and games, it adds up. THe amzon deal comes out at about 220 euro with your choice of 2 games and a 120gb hard drive.
More expensive, yes. better value for money, definitely.

Most people already have high capacity USB drives so if someone is just trying to get a console cheap it works out cheap.
Some people like to have a brick & mortar shop to walk in and buy a console.
Spending money to save money doesn't always work out in the end :)
