Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Neither nor there tbh.

I find this Best <insert here> XI nonsense tiring, it's stuff you'd hear kids saying in the playground.

Appreciate Barcelona for what they are; don't try and better them with some pipe dream team.

It's what Real Madrid try very often.

No, because the core of the players know each other for years..growing up with each other. A random group of 11 genius players would be streets behind to start.

Not current but how do you think the french world cup winning team would do v them

meh, id prefer to see the great dutch teams against them

my team, purely based on ball retention

    Berbatov
    Berbatov--Berbatov--Berbatov--Berbatov
    Berbatov--Berbatov--Berbatov--Berbatov
    Berbatov---Berbatov

the ball sticks to the man

The ball sticks to him but the lack of work rate and movement in that team astounds me.

Yes, its possible, go through there team,

Valdes is good, somewhere in the top 10 maybe top 7 keepers around.

Apart from there Dani Alves, I would argue there is better defenders around that you could play in CB and LB.

In midfield Xavi and Iniesta are brillant, gift footballers, but I wouldnt have Toure/Busquets as the best available. (sp?)

Messi is trhe best footballer playing at the moment and Ibrahimovic is again, up there with the best in the world but there is better then Pedro/Henry/Bojan available.

Im not going suggest an alternative 11, Ive just pointed out I think yes its possible, but as stated in other respones what makes the current Barelona squad an exceptional team at passing and retaining the ball is that the whole squad plays a certain way and knows each others possesions and movements.

The Liverpool side of 2007 would do it, they did do it!

This is a much better Barcelona team though.

Decent line up to be honest.

Barcelona: Valdes, Belletti, Marquez, Puyol, Zambrotta, Xavi (Giuly 65), Motta (Iniesta 54), Deco, Messi, Saviola (Gudjohnsen 82), Ronaldinho.
Subs Not Used: Jorquera, Van Bronckhorst, Thuram, Oleguer.

Liverpool: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Agger, Riise, Finnan, Sissoko (Zenden 84), Alonso, Gerrard, Bellamy (Pennant 80),Kuyt (Crouch 90).
Subs Not Used: Dudek, Hyypia, Gonzalez, Mascherano.

Barca won nothing that year though and weren't playing football at the standard that they have over the last couple of seasons under Pep, Liverpool did well though. In Paris in '06 Arsenal did very well considering we only had 10 men for 72mins and even at that, I blame Almunia for the goals!

Casillas and Reina have 121 caps for Spain between them (Iker with 102 of them admittedly)

How many caps has Valdes? He is in the same league as Almunia, Reina would be perfect for Barca with his distribution, big mistake getting rid of him years ago.

Valdes is currently playing better than Casillas. Their is strong support for Valdes being number 2 choice in Spain, just so happens that Spain have 3 outstanding goalkeepers. Fabregas doesn't start for Spain, useless?

Rofl, how many trophies does Valdes have?

    Barcelona
    Spanish League (3): 2004–05, 2005–06, 2008–09
    Spanish Cup: (1) 2008–09
    Spanish Supercup (3): 2005, 2006, 2009
    UEFA Champions League (2): 2005–06, 2008–09
    UEFA Super Cup (1): 2009
FIFA Club World Cup (1): 2009

    Individual
    Zamora Trophy: (2) 2004–05, 2008–09

Incidentally, Casillas has only ever won the Zamora trophy (keeper that concedes the least goals) once. Valdes will be winning it for the third time this year.

If you honestly think Valdes is in the same category as Almunia then you need your head examined.

Using trophies isn't a very valid way of proving how good he is. I'm not saying Valdes is bad put I still think he's rightfully 3rd choice keeper for Spain and is a level below the best keepers in the world. He's still miles ahead of Almunia, Almunia wouldn't even make a Top 30 list.

If you're talking pure passing abilities, then I reckon these would give them a good shot...

    ......................Buffon

    Ramos.........Rio..........Carvalho.........Evra

    ..........................Pirlo
    .........Fabregas................Alonso
    .........................Nasri

    ...........Kaka/Robinho....Berbatov

Ugh .... Barca - fap fap fap fap.

Anyway, this question is silly. Of course you can pick 11 players that can pass the ball as well but they need to be drilled and orgainsed to play like that.

And it's not just passing, it's getting the ball back - Barca pressed and pressed Arsenal into losing possession time and time again. This comes from being an organised hard working unit
