2000 Merc C220d V 2001 Merc C220d

Hi All,

I've just sold my camper & my trusty Skoda Octavia & need to buy something with a good bit of pulling power to tow a touring caravan for the summer. Not aiming to spend a lot, up to 6K. I've always fancied a Merc & recently drove a really nice 2001 Merc 220d, newer type with round headlamps. Car was good but I was put off by the display panel in the middle of the dash. It reminded me of a 2001 Peugeot 607 I had a few years ago with alarm bells going off for everything. When I turned off the engine it warned of 1 malfunction. I've just seen a 2000 Merc 220d on the web, the older model with square/rectangular lights, 100K miles with 2 years NCT. Is this model a better buy & maybe have less electronics. Anyone experience both or any opinions.

I'm surprised you haven't been inundated with people saying you'd be mad to buy the newer one. My opinion is the the older (w202) model is probably one of the last properly made Mercs so would be the one I'd get, all things being equal.
