Thanks Guys for the replies. I understand Kelticknight what you are saying about the soarview cert, but am I right in thinking that we will not get any combo box that is soarview and freewiew/freesat approved,so we always have to take some risk when looking at combo boxes?

I guess my main question is, have rte or bbc/uk plans to change to newer broadcasting systems that would make this qbox useless in the next few years.I guess rte are unlikely to change having just launched the damn thing. But I think I did read somewhere that bbc/uk are changing from DVD-S to something new,is that correct and would that make these current boxes useless?

the tuner cars in these type of poxes are different from lets say triax etc ,where in there type of boxes you can change the tuner easly in 5 mins as its plug and play setup,so lets say they change from dvb-s too something else, all you do is open the box, take out tuner card in it and put in new one, simple

If you want PVR that's for TV with no DTT, you need dual tuner. (see DCENR) If the TV can receive Saorview without a setbox, then a PVR only needs one DTT tuner.

Many thanks for that. Good to know that this box has a few years life at least. Thanks for all the info you posted on this box to date. Look forward to reading more. I'm almost convinced now that this is the box for me....

Here's a question I would like to ask which may hopefully help a lot of people out. Is MHEG5 a hardware based standard. Or is it a case that software can be used to make a tuner MHEG5 compliant.

Say, can all DVB-T tuners be made capable of receiving MHEG5.
Or, can all DVB-T2 tuners be made capable of receiving MHEG5 etc.

    MHEG5 is software, not hardware.

Theoretically yes MHEG5 could be added to DVB-T/DVB-T2 boxes without. BTW, DVB-T or DVB-T2 is only a tuner module.

Will it happen ? No of course not. Each OEM writes the initial software for their box, this differs from box to box. To rewite and recompile the software for each box would require the code for each box which aint public domain. You would also need a MHEG5 software engine - not free written by the likes of Cabot/S&T/RedButton.

From end 2012 all new TV over 30" are required to have CI+ under Nordig spec. CI+ can run MHEG5 via its pcmia slot. But most of those TVs will have MHEG5 anyhow.

LG have open use of MHEG5 in their TVs as they wrote their own MHEG5 engine.

I ordered QBox HD Mini from sat-shop.co.uk. sat-shop don't have the QBoxHd with the four tuner modules but HISAT.com (UK) has both.

    Not enough info.

Where are you located? Have you been able to receive the DTT channels before this? Have you done a manual scan and with what frequency? What firmware version are you using?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Galen

Hi Apogee, I'm in Swinford, Co. Mayo. I am able to receive the Irish DTT on my Mvision HD300 without any problem. I have updated Qbox's firmware. At the moment It's scanning for fta channels 'slowly' so I'll try a manual scan later.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Galen

I just got Irish channels on a manual scan.

The standard terrrestrial.xml file in the Qbox and many linux typre receivers do not have a full listing of DVB-T frequencies, so you have to do some searching to get the channels you want.
I do know of another forum that deals heavily with the qboxhd and provides an updated terrestrial.xml on line to help you ... but not sure i can post the forum name here ....

Not sure how you got it for that price:confused:

I just contacted them and its £200 for the box with 2nd tuner + £20 delivery
so that makes it 252 euro in total?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Robxxx7

Which is about the same as KELTICKNIGHTT stated !

    So yes, good value

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭KELTICKNIGHTT

cheers Robxxx7,was about too say the same
qbox mini cost me £179.00 plus t-tuner cost ,plus delivery, which is what i said, cheap for open source linux system

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭marrakechheat

Alright ladies dont get your knickers in a twist. When you said plus i thought you meant it was included in the price:rolleyes:

I have purchased one but i still think the delivery was a bit steep at £20 considering its free to england.

ok lady :D,i know you think its expensive for delivery but most things cost for a box that size £20 or more,as i get alot stuff from uk,
there was a cheaper site for box but didnt have the t-tuner for the box so didnt get here,i think stb posted a link on the thread here

    hey guys
just noticed this thread about qbox mini
does anyone use this with 2 sat tuners instead of the extra terrestial tuner,
will it work ok that way for recording 1 channel and watching another

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Robxxx7

its a bit off thread considering this is the terrestrial section but in answer to your question .. 2 x DVB-S is no problem and will do as you want

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 419 ✭✭ULMarc

Two DVB-S tuners would be the setup I'd recommend anyway. considering at the moment we have only one mux to work off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

DVB-S2 is what is needed now. Not DVB-S (For Satellite)

On Terrestrial there will be 2x Mux soon and DVB-T needed, only one if TV is compatible, dual tuners for any real PVR for un-compatible TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Robxxx7

Just to confirm that the qbox does work with DVB-S2 tuners

Does anyone want a one month old secondhand QBoxHD Mini? It's taken me a month to sort out it's software problems but I'm sick of it now. I'm posting it here because who'd be interested on Adverts.ie

    PM me if you're interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,170 ✭✭✭The Ayatolla

    What are the software problems?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Galen

I've had trouble with the crossepg plugin causing my dtt tuner to stop but I've that sorted now thanks to people on the Sat-Shop forums. Everything else seems to be working okay now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,059 ✭✭✭gooner99

Gallen. I think you are saying it's now working 100% , but you've been put off the box with the problems that you've had with it?

Can you please post or pm the price and if you can send it by courier or if it's for local collection only?

Also how do you find the boot up time on it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Galen

It's sold. A mate is taking it off my hands.

No probs Gallen. Will probably hold off now for a couple of months to see what way the combo boxes and saorview/freesat go.

I'd run if I was you. The QBox is the biggest pain in the arse. Damn dtt tuner just stopped working again - I thought I had it sorted once and for all. Obviously I was wrong..

DuoLabs have released a new filesystem and bootloader for the QBoxHD mini http://www.qboxsvn.com/ and look what's in the bugfix list: Bugfix: Ticket #713: Sometimes there isn’t a stream from DVB-T (source of my trouble)

Same old story with Duolabs so ,their software was always poor and buggy.
I thought they would get it right with this receiver but obviously not .
Hard to beat the Dreamboxes for support .

going by other forums, its enigma 2 mostly but its also up too company, theres another user of qbox on boards who doesnt have any trouble,my problem was crossepg too and ddt ,wont be using crossepg and with new firmware will sort it,as im not much into Linux, probably why im off the box ,happy with all the feature and 3 usbs, playing media, picture and sound is the best i have seen so far, Duolabs and sellers do see threads like this and helps them im told,so we see, will update firmware etc and have it working right and sell it as family looking for something more simple too use with less features,as for dream boxes, little over priced just for sat and ddt for most people

Sorry to hear that the experiences have not been so great.I guess we want all the features, but we also want plug n play simplicity. Although at the moment the plug n play combo receivers, even like triax certified one has problems. Can I ask you guys that are selling up,what are your plans now. Will you go with another combo and if so which one or wait to see what new combos come out. Or will you go with a new DTV with Saorview and mheg5 and then add a freeview/freesat hd box or..... ??

Trying to decide myself, as my freesat box has packed in and the picnic box I have has a couple of problems. It takes about 5-10 minutes before it will power up from standby, always says there are new channels available and suffers from time to time from freezing. my preference was for a combo, as the wife is fed up with changing scart inputs on the tv and having to use 2 boxes.hmmm decisions, decisions...

Dreambox never have problems do they :D

All Enigma2 software suffers from issues no matter which box you have. They all have bugs and its a matter of getting these fixed, these boxes have only been out 3 or 4 months or something ..still early days in ironing out some bugs.

The software on the whole is fine, and if you think this box is rubbish then good luck on your next purchase but i would advise to stay away from linux boxes unless you can put up with some bugs or indeed use the SVN yourself and fix them

@ Robxxx how do you find them compared to Dm 800 performance wise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Robxxx7

2 different beasts relying on different architecture aswell as a big enough price difference.

Its fair to say that DM800 has far more support around compared to the QBox but DM800 is only single tuner.

Performance wise, the CPU on the QBox although slower is not as fully utilised compared to the DM800, the DM800 runs at about 8% occupancy and the Qbox about 7%.
Sure there are still some bugs on the Qbox but they are being worked through.
There are more teams supporting DM800, but there are still a few supporting the Qbox such as SIF Team.

QBoxHD software used to be buggy and poor on their older receivers, but the software here on the mini has been totally rewritten and is far more stable.
All Linux receivers are not plug and play, and some people find it hard to get their heads around how to get things working .. but for the price its a good little box, i don't use it as my main box as i have a DM800, but for my bedroom and its never really missed a beat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭KELTICKNIGHTT

hopefully the new updates for qbox mini will fix few bugs and i be happy,as its has alot of features and promise
i do use it as main box in living room

HEY iVE BEEN READING THREADS FROM THE START AND WAS WONDERING HAVE YOU SOLD YOUR BOX AND MOVED ON TO ANOTHER BOX AS UPC have now cancelled my analogue channels so need to get sorted - I have an Open Box S9 in sitting room but would prefer a twin tuner and this one seemed to be the cheapest, do you not recommend it anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭KELTICKNIGHTT

if your into linux based unit at a cheap price, then yes but if your not into messing with linux,i say no,there few here ,think powercity are selling golden media combo.seems good, mvision seems good also, talking too few installers say Ferguson combo can be abit of a pain, you could also try the triax combo seems ok,abit messing with menu ,hope it helps a little

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Shezsharks

Thanks for the fast reply, my openbox is grand really it was just a twin tuner Id prefer but now need a combo to get the DTT Irish channels as I dont have them at all anymore so making it a bit more difficult to decide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

Go on to adverts.ie and check out Sam Russel's (frequent poster here) little box. Now available for 45 yoyos + postage. This will tune in all the Irish DTT channels and you can connect up a hard drive to it to record onto.

i know several sat installers and being told, mvision a good buy, best way too see is a supplier who carries both Ferguson and m vision, they have more returns from Ferguson, seems the older triax combo hd 527 combo is good too,the newer one the 537 while it has the mbeg5 ,have few menu issues,if your handy with Linux box.the the qbox mini ok but it can be a pain, personnaly i wouldnt touch again after my experience, while the picture and sound was brilliant ,was slow too bootup, maybe common with linux, editing was a pain too think the bigger qbox one is way better machine with built-in wifi, seems too work good
from i can see now, mvision would be good choice

    Hi

Sorry for the newbie question but a few months back I posted on the Sat form wondering if there was a DDTV+FTA alternative to SKY+

Essentially a box that does everything that SKY+ does but uses a DDTV and FTA feed.

I want to get rid of Sky for cost reasons but enjoy the the functionality of Sky +

Functionality would include, record from EPG (on external devise I am aware), playback, pause and rewind live TV, record up to two programs simultaneously, allow 'series link' type functionality

On that thread someone mentioned the QBOX HD Mini ?

Can the QBOX HD Mini do all the above ?

Again sorry for the newbie question.
