Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

OK apologies for such a basic question in advance:eek:

i have a bike with SPD fitment and it came with little plastic gammy 'pedals' clipped into the SPD fittings. I now have the SPD shoes. How do I remove the 'pedals' ?? I've pulled at them and yanked them from side to side and i'm afraid of doing damage. Do I just apply force and reef them off ?

    Thanks.

Just twist them as hard as you can. They'll pop eventually,

    yep.

and my gut tells me yank it off - but my head (after years of servicing my own motorbikes) tells me that nothing should ever be forced.....

not sure if your talking about removing the full pedal or if it is one of these plastic platforms that inserts on to a SPD pedal.

If your removing the full pedal:
check to see if you can insert a hex key on the opposite side of the crank to pedal. then just screw it off. You might need to use a wrench also where the pedal meets the crank. They can be tight.

If its the plastic platform - twist, yank, etc - I hear they are an absolute bitch to put on and off.

Nope you gotta force em off.

Had the same thing on my epic.

They just need to be forced. It wont break the pedal.

If your unsure bring em to your LBS.

    Is this them

jesus - trying to get these pedal things to clip back in is even worse than getting them off was

already missing a fair portion of my knuckles.

was hoping to pop them back in and just use a pair of goretex hiking boots for the winter commute - might be easier to just buy a pair of SPD boots though......

edit- actually, whats better for commuting - SPD boots or just a neoprene overshoe with my current shoes ????? thanks

Always a good idea to loosen the spring on the clips as much as possible before you go messing with the plastic inserts. They can be really really hard to get in and out otherwise, as someone else said, a screwdriver and a bit of leverage is usually best for getting them out.

thanks zil - i actually got them off a few months ago - just putting them back on for the winter instead of buying more shoes.

    a hammer did the job.

I only started cummuting by bike in March this year and have decided to try to commute at least 3 times a week right through the winter. After getting caught in a few heavy snow/rain downfalls I have decide to get boots instead of booties. I found the booties get destroyed and can cost 40+ euro, where the boots should last a few years and keep my toes warm. (only going with the boots as my commute is 30Km each way and cold wet feet really annoy me after 15 of so mins) I would also change the pedals on my road bike for the winter so I could use the SPD boots on both bikes.

here are the ones I am currently looking at:

    http://www.slanecycles.com/northwave-fahrenheit-2010-black-winter-boots-p-4526.html

There is also a brand called “Lake” and this model tick all the boxes in that they are watertight, warm and take both SPD and SDP-SL but I cannot find a local internet supplier.

if anyone knows of a local supplier for any of the above I would be greatful, prefer to buy shoes after trying them on, get messed up with width options in the past.

    Thanks

I was going to post this myself but zil got there first- it is essential to loosen the spring completely before removing the black plastic bits if you don't want to damage them (the plastic bits, not the pedal.) They come off handy enough with the spring loose.
