Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Racing lineup:
COLTORTI; PINILLOS, MORATÓN, TORREJÓN, CHRISTIAN; DIOP, COLSA; ARANA, CANALES, MUNITIS; TCHITÉ

    Real Madrid lineup:
CASILLAS; ARBELOA, ALBIOL, METZELDER, MARCELO; DIARRA, GAGO, GRANERO, VAN DER VAART; RONALDO, HIGUAÍN

Surprising to see Metzelder in the team.

Someone nearly scored a header for Madrid and forced a good save but I had it on mute! Could have well been Higuain as it definitely wasnt Ronaldo anyway.

Canales has been very good so far. Opened up the Real defence twice already.

    1-0

    Ronaldo (pen)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

How many more soft penalties will those front bottoms get this season?

Christ sake, looking at the replay, he threw himself over. Prick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭redout

Ronaldo has an insane amount of his goals this season by means of peno and free-kick.

That is a massive difference between him and Messi.

Messi scores far more from open play.

Looked like a definite pen to me (stream is a bit laggy though).

Erra CR made a meal of it. If he wanted to stay on his feet, he could have done.

That's a ridiculous argument though, and very easily disproved, if you're using it to show that it counts as scoring less goals.

Why change the habit of a lifetime.

I must say I'm glad hes gone from United for such reasons alone.

As I said my steam is a bit laggy, but the defender threw his leg out and never looked like getting anywhere near the ball, Ronaldo was caught. whether or not he could've stayed on his feet it was a foul.

    Its a fact.

Messi scores more goals from open play than Ronaldo.

I didnt say it means he score less goals but I did say he scores less from open play.

I am actually going to look up how many penos and free-kicks Ronaldo has scored this season as it must be a sizeable percentage.

From memory alone I think Ronaldo has about 7 freekick (all Comps) and around 3 Peno (league).

Scoring from free kicks and penalties is equally as difficult as scoring from open play.

Does that include the peno he scored in this game ?

If so that means an astonishing 40% of his 25 goals this season came via penalty or free-kick.

I was aware it must be quite he but I will investigate to get an accurate figure.

A free attempt at goal is as difficult to score from than open play ?

Granted free-kicks require talent but your statement is just wrong.

What an odd thing to say.

Yea, 3 penns in the league including this one.

I think he may have more freekicks though.

If he had scored say 10 penos I would agree with you, but discounting his tally based on the amount of freekicks is wrong.

It's usually harder to score a freekick than score from open play.

    Also-

Messi has 2 freekicks and (2 from 3) penos.

I would dispute that and say it doesnt apply for every player.

Players like Juninho, Beckham and Ronaldo all have a very rare and unique talent to score from free-kicks compared to players as a whole.

They aren't as guaranteed a goal as a tap in.

If penalties are so easy to score, how come most teams have a dedicated taker?

I would not look down on a player's scoring record because of a high percentage of set piece goals.

If you're going to say Ronaldo's record is less impressive due to his set piece goals, go through all other strikers goals and compare how many tap ins, or easier chances are included in others' records, will you discount them too?

When did I say that I look down on his record because of this ?

I think that you have picked me up wrong.

I was just pointing out that its a big difference between the two players which it is.

Beckham only scored something like 30 freekicks for united.

Given the amount of Freekicks he took, I'd say he conversion rate was well under 10%.

Most top strikers would score more than 10% of their chances from open play I would say.

But did you not mean that the difference you see is Ronaldo's record is worse than (presumably) Messi's, because he's scored more free kicks and penalties?

Sorry, if I've picked you up wrong, but that's how I saw it.

No, I just meant thats its a difference in their games.

To say Ronaldo scores less would have been absurd when you consider over the past 3 seasons he has more goals than Messi

    Ronaldo - 93
    Messi - 89

Beckham has somewhere between 60-70 in his career which is very high.

I know Juninhio also has quite a high amount, definitely over 50.

Not sure what figure Ronaldo is on but it can only grow.

My point was getting at your accusation doesnt apply to every player and I dont believe it does. You say more than 10% from open play but I would wager them players couldnt score anywhere close to the amount these players can from free-kicks. Also these players get far less attempts from free-kicks than strikers get from open play.

So what your basically saying is, for most players scoring a freekick is harder than scoring from open play.

wasn't that what the initial argument was about?

Absurd argument in the first place lads tbh.

That is common sense but its not what I said.

I already pointed out that talent is required for free-kicks and that certain players possess a unique knack for doing it which makes it easier for them players to score from free-kicks than your average player.

I can't believe Ronaldo missed that open goal from less than 6 yards!

And so Real's record 10 game run of scoring 3 or more goals comes to an end.

    1-0

    Juanito....

Scrappy goal, but great cross from Simao.

Game over, Forlan and Tiago finish the game off. 3-0
