It's probably "handsfree ready" since new, it just wasn't installed... Wouldn't imagine it's as easy as you think to get it going.

I have an 03 Passat which has bluetooth but has the old Nokia cradle so I can't use it until (I pressume) I switch to a cradle which can take my own phone.

What type of radio is it?Is it the original radio (e.g Gamma or Beta) fitted by the factory. If so I wrote a thread on how to integrate a Nokia CK300 bluetooth car kit to the Gamma model here:

If its a third party radio such as a lidl one with bluetooth fitted google the model number to try and find the manual in order the pair your phone with it. You might also need to trace the wiring depending on who installed it.

Most radios in modern cars are enabled to take a bluetooth kit from the factory as an option.

The best thing to do is call into a VW dealership - preferably where it was bought - and see if they can tell you if the car came with Bluetooth from the factory.
