03-04-2010 7:34am#1Live performances can be breathtaking. The song often comes across as less produced than a studio mix, more authentic and real. Sometimes, that is. And you have the live audience of course.
The Stones performing 'Paint it Black' live in Argentina, 2006 (I think). This is just incredible..
Waits live on Letterman. So much better than the album version..
A great version of 'Rain Dogs', recorded sometime in the mid 80's. From the Big Time Live album.
Roger Waters - Comfortably Numb. My favourite version of this song ever. You really need to buy the In the Flesh dvd and listen to it on surround sound to really appreciate it.

Some bands really are at their best when preforming live. My Bloody Valentine and Flaming Lips are two bands that come to mind. i left with an endorphin high(or something along those lines) and was buzzing for an hour or so afterwards. I'd absolutley love to see Tom Waits but over €100 for a ticket....jayzuz...i know free market and all that but ffs Tom

OMG - that is the shi** **** version of Comfortably Numb, the only person who can sing the chorus is David Gilmore, even OZ PF sound better than that !!0 -

It was documented that the price had nothing to do with Tom. Public Liability Insurance is ridiculous in this country normally, but the Tom Waits got absolutely cruicified by the insurance people because it was in Tom's own tent set up in Phoenix Park. Tom said he didn't like the price.
This one always gets me... Back when they used the Firebird Finale and played Ta Da...

Waits got a bit of stick for this and very undeservingly so. The ticket prices were a lot less in other European countries and Waits was hardly aware of the rip-off Ireland culture and decided to charge the Irish more. That tent, I'm pretty sure, is the exact same tent used in the marquee festival in Cork by Aiken Promotions. They're the same people who brought Waits to Dublin and promoted it. I still have my doubts about their claims on high insurance costs for justifying the high ticket prices. They just ceased the opportunity and knew people would pay the money to see him. This was pre-recession time (just), and I don't think they'd get away with it today tbh. It was €135 for the cheapest in the end, but worth it. Aikens cleaned up.

Maybe it's the story behind it, or the content of the song... Gives me the chills every time.
But my favourite - and I can't find a good video on YouTube, so you'll have to buy the DVD - is the twenty minute long rendition of Tenth Avenue Freeze Out on the Live in New York City film. That man has an entire room in the palm of his hand.0 -
Been watching countless amounts of The Gaslight Anthem vids on Youtube. Serious performers. For anyone that doesnt know them id advise checking them out. There from New Jersey and very much Springsteen inspired. They performed with him at Glastanbory last year.
This vid really shows their passion and its a great song aswell;)

ya they are unreal, some seriuos live performances. Ragin I never heard of them when they came to Dublin last year. Loads of quality live vids on Youtube. I think the way Brian interacts with the crowd in live performances like below show how good they would be to see live
