gravel for dog pen

Hi everyone, Is there any type of gravel that would give a smooth(ish) finish when whacked down? How many tonne would i need for a 17ftx10ft area, the area i want to do currently has a rough hardcore base.

I wouldn't use gravel - I imagine it would be quite harsh on the dog's feet - Dogs tend to pace when in a confined space.

As for the amount, thats really a matter of how think do you want it.

Use concrete easily washed down to keep clean, any sort of gravel will be a pain in the a** to keep clean.
There paws will be ok just as long as you bring your dog out for a walk/run every day
