thanks folks- its the original non L version- from my limited experience i think a tripod would be necessary to get the best out of the lens- camera shake and limited depth of field make hand holding very difficult- dont know if the new L version would be worth the extra cost involved-most shots would still need the tripod and any optical improvements would hardly be noticed in most situations
