Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was always told to back up my work onto an external hardrive, just in case something happens to your computer.

Well turns out my external hard drive went kaput.

Problem is I had just re installed mac osx 10.6 on to my laptop and mac mini, putting all my files onto my hard drive. 3 years of work, also I am in my final year in college and all the files are GONE.

I tried computer tech.....nothing they could do

I tried Computers unlimited ...nothing they could do, they advised I send it to England, which would cost upwards to 1800 for any data recovery.

So does anyone know any data recovery geniuses or any advice.

    I am desperate.

    Freeze it:

If you can, keep it frozen while using it, this may work, if it doesn't, no harm done as it didn't work anyway :D

Congrats on reading what was contained in the link. I have succesfully revived drives (for only about 10 minutes though) using this method.

I had a look through it, I am trying to find a solution that will last longer than 10 mins, there is over 40gigs worth on it.

Keep it in the freezer while using, it may not even spin, but it's worth a shot.

In all sense of Reality: how much did Three Years of College cost you? It may be worth it to recover this Data.

I am just scoping out maybe someone in Ireland can do the same, instead of having to send it across sea's.

The files may still be on your Mac laptop and Mac mini, depending on what kind of a re-install you have done, how recently, and how much you have used it since. I mean technically, data stays on a hard-drive until that exact part of the disc is written over, and if your files were sufficiently far out on the disc (quite likely), there's no reason a clean install should have physically overwritten them.

Its not something I have any experience with, but I would certainly stop using them immediately while you look into it, on the off chance that someone can recover the data from them.

A quick google for hard disk recovery Ireland throws up a few options.

if its a disk - head crash('click of death') then as far as I'm aware no one in Ireland is doing that kind of recovery. The disk and head are like a record player and needle, except that the head of a harddisk floats (about the thickness of a fingerprint) above the disc. In order to replace the heads they have to open the drive- the drive is contained in a vaccum and if its opened in the air it will oxidize immediatley, so it's gotta be opened in a controlled environment, they will then put the spindles on their own platters and read them and write them to another disc.- it's actually come down in price since the last time I head about that kind of recovery

Thats defintely the best way out and cheapest, even if your formatted the disk (nothing happens to the disk the file system gets rewritten). drop your mac into any HDD recovery centre in Ireland I estimate about €150

You could have at least provided the link for the OP :D

I was going to provide a http://lmgtfy.com/ link but decided against.
Most of the problems in this forum can be solved with google but most people don't know how to use it.
Maybe I'm just cranky because someone just asked me if you need a skype phone to use skype though...

Thanks guys, I have sent it to 2 reputable data recovery companies with no luck, I have been recommended buying this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUVIQHsxQEo and putting my own hard drive in. Does anyone know the time it takes if I had to send it to a specialist?

    Cheers for the help.

What did the Two companies say? - The youtube video is for an enclosure, that's not going to fix the problem.
If your external hard drive isn't spinning and you hear a clicking noise- then I would forget about that drive and try and recover the data from your computers internal drives using something like this
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php

Also- what kind of files do you need to recover?
