Anyone any news on the restoration of the 'Falls Hotel' water turbine electricity generator which was supposed to be happening?

No news, other than preliminary site works are well under way (and can be clearly seen from the bar!). No idea on project schedule / plans.

The picture was taken on my phone so the quality isn't great.

One of the top Denil pass section at Ennistymon

A couple from inside the hydroelectric plant tucked away at the side of the falls. It was dark, damp and I had no tripod so these are high ISO specials:

It does appear to have spat out the turbine

A long exposure from Parteen weir - fairly lively up there with all the sluice gates open!

The shot of the generator room at the falls brings back memories, the then owner Mr Woods showed it to me, all spick and span and all of it working perfectly to supply the hotel with electricity...

First time was 1965 and again in 1967, I'm pretty sure it was working well into the 70s....

In 1967 there was a small hovercraft there too....

I always thought that was part of the hydro plant! Is the square construction behind that part of the denil pass as well? How do the fish get up to the start of your photo?

  • Registered Users Posts: 197 ✭✭Stellaluna

I used to think it was part of the Hydro plant as well! The square construction is a resting pool put in between Denil sections. From what I can tell, the fish have to find the Denil pass at the bottom of the falls that bypasses the hydro plant, then there's a sluice to negotiate before finding their way to the upper Denil pass, the top section of which is in the photograph. It seems like a bit of an obstacle course.

A few years ago, the owner/s of The Falls Hotel said he/they were going to restore the hydro-electric plant but I suppose the money ran out. Pity!

Is that not part of the work they're doing now? I don't know about restoring (there doesn't look to be much to restore from the earlier photo!), but I thought there were putting some hyro plant in place.

Hi Jim, World Pinhole Photography Day is held on the last Sunday of April each year and invites anyone to submit a photo to be included to the WPPD online gallery which can be found at:

    http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/

The only stipulation is that the photo is made with a lensless (i.e. pinhole or variation of pinhole) and can be made on film, paper or through digital chip.

It's great fun you should try it!
