Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    The question: Upgrade from a 05 Audi A4 1.9 TDi 115PS with 64000 miles to a 09 VW Passat Highline 2.0 TDi 140Bhp with 18,000 miles ?

Garage is giving me a €13,500 allowance on my Audi so I only need to pay €9,450 to come up 4 years & get a '09 still under warranty motor.

Ca'nt decide if I should go for this deal or not - what would you do ?

I've had the Audi for 3 years & it's depreciated almost €20,000 in that time so, so much for the "premium" brand retaining a good resale value.

With a 9 month old & another baby on the way, the Audi is extremley tight for space in the back & in the boot when the buggy and all the other paraphernalia is loaded & the Passat has more space in both. Also, the leather seats of the Passat Highline are going to be a necessity when it comes to baby bottles & baby puke !

We do'nt really want an estate or MPV at this time with just 2 kids so the Passat (or other saloon car brand) should suffice & in fairness to the dealer, he is giving me a decent trade in price on the Audi. His Passat is advertised at €22950 & thats as good as one can get on a '09 Highline at present.

The alternative is to drive the Audi into the ground but when baby no. 2 arrives, I do'nt know how we will manage to travel without having bags or toys piled into the back seat between babies or on the floor !

dont underestimate what can and cant get in the boot of the passat. its very big but the opening isnt. I have had 2 saloon passats and traded up to a estate version last year partly due to stuff ive to carry about for work and partly due to the family expanding.

Its a godsend just to be able to open the boot and pile the stuff in and not having to have bits rolling around on the back seats. Have you considered hatchbacks?

I wanted to stick with VAG branded motors as i have good backup with them but didnt find the octavia as comfortable as the passat.

Your getting a good deal there.

Is that Passat an import? There's a rake of them over here that to me look like SE's with leather (not the usual highline seats but the comfortline ones), multi-function wheel and 17's. A guy I work with here bought one for under 11k sterling. Noticed a few of them popping up on carzone recently.

You might be better selling the A4 yourself if you don't mind a small bit of messing around.

I would say your correct where are they all coming from??? i was looking at a passat for the last 2 weeks and i came across loads of these. I didnt like the seats as my 07 highline had sports seats. cheap car though

OP - is it this one? http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/2.0D-140/201013197476254/advert?channel=CARS

The leather on the imported Highlines looks like a fairly bad retro fit job on the comfortline seats. It's all saggy already on the few I've looked at.

The UK Highlines only have manual A/C - Irish versions have Climate Control, and the much nicer Leather Sports Seats.

If you plan on keeping it for a while it may be worth it to pick up a cheaper import, but if you only plan on keeping it for 2 or 3 years, the lower spec will hurt when you come to trade it again - especially as the new Passat is due next year and they are bound to start doing deals on brand new current models before the new one arrives.

OP, did you look at the Skoda Superb? You could probably pick up a new shape 10/09 Superb for similar money. They are roomier than the Passat/A4 and have the extra advantage of the boot being a hatchback as well as a saloon, meaning easier access for a pram/buggy.

    Eg:

I was in the same boat as yourself a few years ago and upgraded from an A4 to a passat. For space alone the passat is miles ahead.I found the A4 very cramped in the back. The 2 Litre 140bhp has plenty of poke even with a loaded booth and 3 - 4 passengers.Although you have been hit hard with depreciation it's a pretty good deal you're getting.

It might have depreciated by 20,000 from the price you paid but that is due to a general drop in prices. It wouldnt cost you 20,000 to move 3 years again to a 08 audi a4. That is what you should be looking at & in fairness you seem to be doing ok with the price being quoted to move to 09 passat.

The car is an import all right, I think its a Northern Irish Car & yes its manual air conditioning & the leather seats are not as nice as the Irish cars but it's got all the usual Highline features & I've done a motorcheck on it which is fine.It is the one in ROR's post.I have test drove the new Superb & if I could sell my own car privately I could pick up a brand new Elegance version for less than €27,000 but I have my car up on done deal for the past 2 weeks & there is little interest.
Overall though most thinks it's a pretty good deal ?

If space is going to be a big consideration, then although the Passat is a lot roomier than the A4, I would be taking a look at an estate version.

I would second the suggestion re. a Skoda Superb estate too.
