The HSE says patients should not be put in the middle of negotiations on radiotherapy services at Whitfield Clinic in Waterford.

The University of Pittsburgh is refusing to provide radiotherapy services to new public patients after the first of May until a new contract is signed with the HSE.

The HSE says a Service Level Agreement between the HSE and Waterford Oncology Associates was put in place to provide treatment at Whitfield.

In a statement they said while that agreement has expired at the end of 2009, there were discussions between the HSE and the Whitfield Clinic earlier this year and payments by account, on agreement, continue to the made to the Clinic.

The HSE is currently in ongoing discussions with Waterford Oncology Associates with regards agreeing a new Service Level Agreement.

Dr Dale Hacking, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at UPMC
says only new patients will be affected until agreement with the HSE is reached.

He says they cannot continue the service without the proper legal framework.

Of the over 1800 patients treated at the clinic in the last three years, eighty percent were public patients.

Dr. Hacking says the numbers requiring treatment in the South East was grossly underestimated.
