Sligo Weekender - media manipulation

This week's Weekender contains a fine example of media manipulation.
    http://www.sligoweekender.ie/news/story/?trs=eyaukfqlsn&cat=news

This story was covered by the Sligo Champion 3 years ago but the Weekender has been conned into regurgitating it, and has swallowed the story peddled by the Cliffoney parish priest.

The background is that Sligo Town speculators bought farmland in Grange at the height of the boom in 2006, outbidding all the locals, and then tried to have the land rezoned. They failed: no-one on Sligo County Council, either councillors or the Executive, would support the move.
They then offered a few acres to the parish priest of Cliffoney in return for rezoning the remainder of the site for housing: that failed but now he has tried again to revive the plan. The Weekender has taken his story as gospel (no pun intended!) and failed to check it with the people who live in the area.

There is a saying "paper never refused ink" but the gullibility of the Sligo media is a constant source of amazement to me!

...and the constant use of the Sligo Champion of the word "city".

"Massive development in the heart of Sligo City Centre"

    "City Council..."

"O'Connell Street in the city centre"

    "Pedestrianisation of city street"

"High street store opens in city centre shopping complex"

Just read their coverage of the 'headshop rave' in Hazelwood - Oy Vey! Essentially urging the parents of Sligo to uprise against local shops. Who needs responsible parenting when you can have lynch mobs instead
