UFC light heavyweight Rodney Wallace is not concerned about Phil Davis' pedigree or hype. When his original opponent Stanislav Nedkov had to withdraw, with just two weeks to go until the fight, Wallace asked specifically for Davis. Although he is currently 0-2 with the organization, 9-2 overall, Wallace may be thinking about the future with the request.

If he loses again, he would likely be out of the UFC. Even if he were to win in a fight over Nedkov, anything short of an impressive victory, and he could have been on the outside looking in. What better way to make a statement to the UFC than to follow up his "Fight of the Night" winning loss to Jared Hamman than to take one of UFC's brightest prospects out at this weekend's "UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen"?

The North Carolina native, although a heavy underdog in the bout, believes he has the skills and ability to make an impact with UFC fans, and turn around what has been a disappointing start to his UFC career. Nicknamed "Sho-Nuff The Master," Wallace sat down with MMA Spot's Andrew Yount to discuss his opponent, fighter marketability, and why Wallace wants to see Anderson Silva lose his title this weekend.

MMA Spot: How are you feeling coming into this fight? Any health issues during camp?
Wallace: I feel good coming into it. No health issues or anything. Everything is in order, everything is intact. Good as usual.

Spot: You have been saddled with a stiff challenge, drawing Phil Davis as a short notice replacement. Were you able to get much specific training in?
RW: A little bit. He’s a little bit less aggressive than the other guy would be, so I’ll have to be a little more patient. He won’t be coming forward as much as Nedkov would be. Just little tendencies that he has. He’s pretty much the same type of fighter, it’s just the little tendencies I have to watch for.

Spot: How did the conversation with the UFC go when they informed you of the change?
RW: [Joe Silva] basically just called my manager and said we need to make a change. They offered Stephan Bonnar a chance, but he declined. I told him was interested in fighting Phil Davis, so [Joe Silva] said he would call him. [Phil Davis] said he’d take the fight; he said, "Rock with it." So I said, “Cool.” And that was it.

Spot: Do you know what happened to get Nedkov pulled from the card?
RW: I think he couldn’t get his visa in time.

    image.php?id=F89D_4C5C535D

Spot: What's the story behind "Sho-Nuff The Master"?
RW: Because the name resonates with everybody. I mean it’s “The Last Dragon.” It’s a fight movie. We fight. So there is no big thing behind it. It’s not like naming myself “The War Machine” or “The Meat Locker” or whatever. It’s just because people resonate with it and its a little comedy relief.

    image.php?id=49C2_4C5C535D

Spot: What's your prediction for the main event?
RW: I want Chael Sonnen to win. Silva’s a bad ass fighter. There’s no doubt about that, everyone knows that. The reason I want Sonnen to win is that I want him to bring that fire back that Silva used to have. Because that’s what people want to see, that fire. I think Silva is so good he doesn’t even have to spark a flame, he can just go out there on gas alone. He doesn’t even need the fire. I think if someone were to beat him and bring that fire back, you know like when B.J. Penn lost—I wanted B.J. Penn to lose. Not because I’m not a fan of him. I just don’t want anyone to feel like they can just run through people.

Spot: So you’re not a fan of the reigning champion, Silva?
RW: No. I want all of the champions to lose one time. If they win five and lose one, it’s all good. People want to think they’re the best in the world. They can still be the best in the world if you lose one every now and again. It just makes you hungrier. Even if you’re a champion, you get tired of beating everybody easily. You want that fire back. You want that same thing you felt when you first started training.

Rumor has it that MMA legend Frank Shamrock will teach a seminar this March in Ireland. It is believed that Irish promoter John Ferguson of Ferguson Sports Group have completed an exclusive deal with NJM Promotions (who brought Wandeli Silva to Ireland in 2010) are behind this. (Mr. Ferguson could not be contacted at this time to confirm this rumor) Shamrock is one of the pioneers of modern mixed martial arts so this could be an amazing opportunity to meet and train with a legend of Mixed Martial Arts! We also believe that there will be 3 more big names to run seminars this year in Ireland and UFC Hall Of Famer Royce Gracie is one of those 3. We hope these rumors are true as this can only be a good thing for Irish MMA. We hope to bring you more news on this very soon.

UPDATE: Ken Shamrock (NOT FRANK) to hold MMA seminar in Ireland as well as Royce Gracie and other Big names.

We caught up with John Ferguson today and asked him a few questions about these rumors.

FH: John, I’m sure you know by now about the rumor going around that you have teamed up with NJM Promotions and plan on having 4 BIG names in the MMA world (Frank Shamrock, Royce Gracie, TBA and TBA) to run seminars in Ireland. Is there any truth to this rumor?

JF: The rumour is close to spot on. I have done a partnership deal with NJM to bring heroes of UFC to Ireland in 2011. It is actually the legendary Ken Shamrock who will be the first on around March 3rd.

FH: If the rumor is true then can you reveal the 4 BIG names that The Ferguson Sports Group & NJM Promotions plan to bring to Ireland to run these seminars?

JF: We have Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie confirmed and will confirm the others when contracts are exchanged but they will be big names.

FH: Can you give us any info on these seminars (location, dates, price, etc..)?

JF: We are working on this now, looking at the best business model to provide maximum value for money. The dates will be Ken at the start of March and Royce at the start of June.

FH: How big to you think this is for Irish MMA and do you plan on doing more seminars near future?

JF: I would love to come out running claiming it’s massive but let’s be real about it, there have been seminars before I stepped up. It’s natural progression for my group and as always we will be doing it differently to those before us. What is big is that we will have four or five stars here in a one year window, hopefully this will raise the profile of the sport in Ireland some more, any positive publicity for MMA in Ireland is good for us all.

    SOURCE
For years MMA matchmakers, pundits, and fans have sought out the next generation of stars. A reality show, such as "The Ultimate Fighter" is the perfect vehicle for bringing young talent to the forefront. However, for other fighters, they have had to make their own way, having to compete for years on small shows or undercards of medium sized events—all in an attempt to impress someone enough to earn a shot on the big stage. MMA Spot's David McKinney and J.A. Yount combed through hundreds of fighters to pinpoint 15 of the best fighters that many people have not heard of, but should know.

    1. Eduardo Pamplona (13-2) Welterweight
Aside from being one of the meanest looking fighters on the face of the planet, the Brazilian Muay Thai specialist is also one of the biggest 170-pound fighters in the world. In his 2007 International Fight League bout with Robbie Lawler, Pamplona completed dwarfed the top-ten middleweight and appeared to be stronger and willing to trade with the slugger. Currently riding an eight-fight winning streak dating back to that loss to Lawler in 2007, the 35-year-old is now training at Black House in Los Angeles and is looking to become more active in the near future. He boasts victories over Jorge "Macaco" Patino, Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons, and Daniel Acacio, and has competed in Shooto, Pancrase, and M-1 Challenge along with the one time in the IFL.
    eduardo_pamplona.2011.02.21.gif

    2. Givanildo “The Arm Collector” Santana (15-1) Middleweight
“The Arm Collector”—there may be no better nickname in all of the sport. Santana owns 13 of 15 wins by armbar, including 12 in a row at one point in his career. Although he has competed for promotions such as EliteXC and M-1, he has yet to find the right fit in one of the bigger organizations, partly because there are very few established middleweights willing to put their arms on the line against him. Santana’s submission ability is unquestioned and in recent bouts he has shown a vastly improved striking game. Expect to see the Santana in one of the major organizations in the next year.
    giva_santana.2011.02.21.gif

    3. Alexis “The Exorcist” Vila (9-0) Flyweight
One of the baddest 125-pound fighters on the planet, undefeated Cuban native Alexis Vila is currently training with the killers at American Top Team. His life has had ups and downs—including a three-year stint in prison after driving his car directly into the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport—but his MMA career has only been ups so far as he continues to dominate progressively stronger competition. The former two-time world champion wrestler and 1996 Olympic bronze medalist may be long in the tooth at 39 years old, but he feels that he still has many years left to compete and recently called out any 125- or 135-pound fighter in the world. So far there have been no takers.
    alexis_vila.2011.02.21.gif

    4. Jimi “The Poster Boy” Manuwa (9-0) Light Heavyweight
Jimi “The Poster Boy” Manuwa has the size, talent, and personality to become one of the biggest stars in the sport. At 28 years old Manuwa is still learning the sport, but has been impressive since his first outing, finishing all nine of his bouts to date. His striking power will always be his strength, but he has shown great improvements in his jiu-jitsu, wrestling and Muay Thai. The only negative against the former power lifter is his durability, having battled injuries on-and-off for a few years. Currently the Ultimate Challenge MMA light heavyweight champion, he has almost outgrown the European circuit and should soon be looking to make an impact internationally.
    manuwa_vs_luke_blythe_200x150_8fps.gif

    5. Mike “Lil Hulk” Easton (10-1) Bantamweight
Despite not having competed in nearly a year and a half, the Ultimate Warrior Challenge bantamweight champion and Lloyd Irvin product is still one of the best prospects in the sport. Easton is the quintessential fighter of the new generation: he loves to strike, but his ground game is even more dangerous. On top of being a solid prospect, Easton has boosted his resume with wins over top ten flyweight John Dodson and former WEC bantamweight champion Chase Beebe. No plans are currently in place for Easton to return to the cage in the near future, but when he does, expect him to possibly get a look from the UFC.
    mike_easton.2011.02.21.gif

    6. Renan "Barao" Pegado (25-1) Bantamweight
Twenty-five consecutive wins, 12 submissions, six TKOs, even two wins in the WEC—yet, Renan “Barao” do Nascimento Mota Pegado is still unknown to most MMA fans. The 24-year-old Nova Uniao product has been impressive throughout his winning streak, rarely losing a round. His two WEC appearances have come by submission, hopefully earning him a television spot soon. Expect big things from him as the new UFC bantamweight division begins to settle out amidst the recent upheaval.

    7. Stanislav “Staki” Nedkov (11-0) Light Heavyweight

This fierce Bulgarian has had his UFC debut put on hold multiple times due to injuries to whether his own or his opponents. However, once he makes his debut there should not be much doubt as to why he is a star in the making. Nedkov’s power, together with his grappling ability makes him a very dangerous opponent. His two Sengoku bouts against Kevin Randleman and Travis Wiuff are his biggest wins in his career. Nedkov has been compared to current UFC fighters Karlos Vemola.

MMA Spot - Thomas Fires Back At New Talk From Mayorga
Over a year removed from a fight that never was, the friction between Din Thomas and Ricardo Mayorga has still not subsided. Mayorga has continuously made statements regarding fights with mixed martial arts fighters and has been largely ignored, until now. As the one-year mark from the failed Shine Fights “Worlds Collide” event that was to be headlined by Mayorga vs. Thomas passed, Thomas—who has not fought since then—still wants to settle the score with the former boxing champion.

In a statement to MMA Spot’s Andrew Yount, the nine-time UFC veteran relit the flame that the two began burning over a year ago.
    Din Thomas wrote:
“Comedian Steve Harvey said, ‘Dogs don't bark at parked cars...they only bark at cars that are moving.’ This couldn't be more evident than all the Chihuahua style yappin' from Ricardo Mayorga. It's easy to yap when there’s people to protect him at press conferences, weigh-ins, and now on Twitter. He claims to want to fight Nick Diaz, B.J. Penn, and myself, of course. He had his chance with me at Shine Fights last May in Fayetteville, N.C. and he didn't show up.”
Thomas went on to explain how he saw the situation surrounding Mayorga’s unwillingness to step into the ring against him last May............>>Continue Reading<<
