    Yaris I'd have to say.

So many to choose from really. If you don't mind going up to a 1.25, the Fiesta is a decent car. The Clio (1.2?) is a good car as well. If you don't mind the look of the Panda, it looks like excellent value.

Make it the revised 1st generation model though (mid 2003–2005), the second gen one feels like it's made from tin foil.

We have a 2003 Sol for nipping about town and it's never put a foot wrong in several years. The MiL has a 2007 and it's awful.

I'd say Yaris or maybe bump up to a Focus.

Yaris would be the best for reliability and cost of ownership (later resale value, servicing, tax, insurance, repairs, has no timing belt)
They're not the cheapest to buy but long term they make sense.

Don't like the car a single bit but I have to agree with Yaris being the best choice.
They're more expensive than rest of the range but you'll get back a lot on resale.
And as they're toyota, they're pretty reliable, does the job pretty well and have decent bit of room inside.

But if you don't care about the reliability and resale stuff, the Fiesta is a much better car to drive.
