Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry that your shot had to be eliminated - I liked it a lot.

Wow - I don't have anything like a 1.4 - the way it throws the background so much out of focus is just great.

It's got its drawbacks though, anything away from the centre at 1.4 starts to get soft towards the corners and the DoF is so shallow the slightest movement from subject or photog can throw the image slightly out of focus.

On the upside it does give awesome vignetting on full frame.

I'd seriously say 70-80% of my shots are taken with the 50mm.

BTW the fact that Andy is a damn handsome guy did not do any harm to the pics. And I'm on Ebay checking the prices of a 1.4/ 50mm

Assignment or not, it's a brilliant shot - any chance you'd tell us what set-up/settings you used. I know I'd appreciate the help.

I think it should be left in. So what if it was taken just a few hours before the assignment was setup. She probably dosn't have the opportunity to retake. Anyway, This is about learning and comparing styles, with a little competitive element added for the fun of it. :)

Btw, I didn't vote for it cos it's underexposed and I've recently given up and hate all things to do with smoking. But that just my POV. :)

I love the assigment thread but being a lazy so-and-so I nearly always miss the dead line.

    Reference
used a nikon strobe, think sb25 at 1/4 power on a closed black reflective umbrella, [the umbrella is shut, facing away from the subject, so the light is reflected as a beam]
-Umbrellas placed around 1-2 o clock at the subjects face level,

took the image with a 40D, 50mm, only 2-3 feet away at
    iso - 100
    aperture 4.5
    shutter 1/250

the wall behind is white and was atleast 4-5 feet away so it appears darker and all the above settings give the vignette effect.
It was taken at night time, so there is not much ambient light, there was a lamp somewhere at the back of the room, so it was fairly dark.

    properties here

Brillant effort and a really cool point of view. The wall frames her great too. Congrats Dave - over to you now to set the new one.

Can I ask - did you PP her feet bigger or was it down to the wide angle lens?

Worthy winner but the quality of some of the entries have been brillient! looking forward to the next one....

Congratulations Dave, All your entries were excellent and you are a worthy winner.
I hope Jessica is given the going rate as your model and not on the minimum wage :D Well done.

highest standard I've seen for an assignment for a long time. Well done David. You shoot some amazing portraits.

Didn't enter this one cause of college work. I'll be there for the next one :D

    Well done winner.

I'm dead happy after receiving 26 votes!! 5 shy of the winner :) tells me I'm doing something right.

Congrats Dave, well deserved. Always enjoy your posts.

Thanks all. Very much appreciated. :)

I kinda forgot I posted that one and I was hoping the one below of Jessica's Mother would win. Anyway, I did a count and looks like it scored 31 votes too. Same as the winning shot. ;) The shot was taken by Jessica herself. I didn't want to mention it in case it influenced the voting. :) She pointed and clicked the camera. I set the camera up and did the PP on it btw.

For me it almost proves that portraiture is about the connection made between the subject and photographer (eg. mother and child). Not so much technical ability or even artistic expression. I couldn't have got that shot. Her mother hasn't smiled at me in years. :D

I guess the onus is on me now to come up with a good enough theme for the assignment. I have a few ideas, so I'll sleep on it and hopefully get it setup by tomorrow sometime.

    Cheers
    David OS
