any1 know of any oldskool hardcore, darkcore, jungle nights that do be on anywere? i remember hearing that kenny ken was playin the twisted pepper last january with an oldskool jungle set, but from my experience theres way too much ragga jungle played at those nights and not enough of the dark stuff, plus there was gonna be alot of dubstep played and im not in2 that at all. anyway, so is there any promoters that actually organise oldskool breakbeat nights or am i just wasting me time even looking??? i know theres a hugh dnb fan base here in dublin but ive never heard of even 1 oldskool night being put on that consisted of hardcore ranging between '89 - '92 or '93. anyway, any info on the matter would be greatly appreciated as im dying 2 go 2 1 of these nights without having 2 catch a boat or plane 2 the uk.

    cheers, es-cee;)

We're always doing those, Kenny Ken and Randall was our 3rd birthday, all the Dubstep was upstairs in a different room (and tbh it was mostly garage, techno and uk funky all being mixed up and pretty much none of the ****e that the rest of the dubstep scene seems to be fixated on for the past few years)

There's a recording of the Randall and Kenny Ken sets up online somewhere, I'll find it for you in a second.

When we do oldschool nights we don't push ragga cheese, we're genuinely committed to digging out the proper stuff from way back when - we've done 88-92 nights, we've done 91-94 nights, we're always VERY specific about the sort of old school we are interested in hearing; the first time we had Randall over he played "Warhead", the second time we had him over he knew not to.

    ;)

(At the same time of course we're all very much interested in pushing the sound and the music forward and not keeping it as some bull**** nostalgia museum experience for people who can't deal with the fact that the 90's are long gone)

thats great anall but the only new breaks im in2 is j-tek and a bit of hardcore, not in2 dnb anymore and jungle is gone a bit stale aswell (for me anyway). would just love 2 have a burn out at an oldskool hardcore gig for a change instead of asylum, sides and olympic nights which can get very repetative music wise altho still good.
i can't speak for every1 of course but myself personally, its not that i cant deal with the 90's being long over its just that i prefer the music from back then, can't find anythin really nowadays from all types of dance that does it for me like oldskool.
anyway drop us that mix man, would like to hear it, cheers:)

^ there's the kenny ken b2b randall @ reach set

We've done J-Tek nights in the past, we had Outrage and Modular over twice and one of our residents (Ricky Force) runs a J-Tek label called Space 2 Pace, although his own J-Tek tunes are a lot more jungle-at-142 than they are Jungle Techno really; have a google for them anyway.

Like I said - if there's sub bass, samples, breaks and strings in there we'll play it, we'll promote it and we'll push it, but we're not in this for the nostalgia buzz - if we do an old school session it's because there's still hundreds and hundreds of lethal tunes from way back that never get played anymore, and we'd rather hear them than listen to the same 40 odd anthems that everyone plays in an "old school" set.

    Dangerous Days

Amazing tune! Most of the stuff on Warm Communications is gold if you like your atmospheric stuff, have a root around for Martsman's remix of Angelzero's "Recess" - not on Youtube though :(

Here's some more classic Seba from the last few years:

Great Loxy & 2Shy set from April last year! Probably my favourite set of 2009, deep dark rolling tribal aggression, loads of old classic thrown in for good measure as well. Loxy is pushing it forward like noone else these days and 2Shy is one of the best hosts in the business.

Really excited to be supporting these lads in the Twisted Pepper next Friday!

Yeah love this, exactly the type of stuff I'd be keen to hunt down. The first minute or so could be a Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream tune!

Actually while browsing around last night I found a net label with lots of free releases... all 320kbps, some very nice stuff in what I've listened to so far.

Ah yes - Materializm are quality all right! The last release by a chap called "Enjoy" is very good.

Another great free netlabel (well, they started off as one but sell CD's now as well, and there's talk of vinyl in the months ahead) is Absys - bunch of Dublin-based Polish guys run it, regular guest on my radio show and they've put out some great stuff over the years - check out the Amháin EP, (a free showcase of Irish productions) and the free release by Ultracode.

Yeah was listening to that release earlier by Enjoy, very good alright. Another that jumped out at me was 'Future Drifting' by ThinKing. Wading my way through the rest of them now.

Cool, will check out that other label too. Never bothered really with free music online before but it seems there is a lot of quality stuff out there.

There really is, I mean lots of it is stuff that is either too niche for a commercial release or else stuff from producers who aren't quite ready for the big time, but the weakening of the vinyl market has mean thtat for better or for worse there's more and more and more quality good stuff being given away all the time, and netabels seem to fill a valuable niche in curating them all and maintaining a webspace for them to be available in perpetuity.

I'll definitely be hunting down more, I suppose there is a lot of crap out there too given the amount of people producing and how easy then it is to be online somewhere offering it for free.

I can not recommend this series of mixes by Instra:Mental and D:Bridge highly enough; there's ten on the site with two more to come, if you heard their recent Fabric Live mix then you'll sort of know what to expect from these guys, and if you don't you should check it all out immediately. Each one starts off with two short "influences" mixes followed by a 45 minute mix of new material followed by another short "influences" mix. - expect everything from Drexciya to Tangerine Dream to Shackleton to Shed, synth epics, 80's b-boy jams and Warp-y electronica.

Not a whole lotta dubstep in here yet... I only picked up the first Burial album a couple of weeks ago and for that I should hang my head in shame.

Anyway, here's one of the many stunning tracks from it.

    Southern Comfort.

Now I need to get his 2nd album.

There's a fair amount of bargain bin rubbish in there to be fair, you've no indication of what kind of nick any of the tunes are in either, and none of that stuff is particularly "RARE"... The vast majority of the good older stuff seems to be on repress labels too.

You'd be better off trawling through the tunes on Youtube and seeing whether you like them or not, having said that there's a few pretty decent classic late Jungle / early Jumpup tunes in there.

Got the D-Bridge & Instra:Mental Fabric mix today, quality stuff alright... listened to most of it in the car on the way home from work, had to raise an eyebrow at one point when I thought it was going a bit autotune/R&B'ish but it worked and didn't last too long!

Oh and just to add, I had to decide between this and the 2nd Burial album... went with this on the basis of having only bought the other Burial a couple of weeks ago...

Ha, yeah I know the tune you mean, i think! Yeah, it's a really nice mix that, they're really onto something I think... Nice to see them casting themselves as "electronic musicians who write at 140 / 170 bpm" and reaching out to an audience beyond DnB....

Yep - pretty much everything on Skull Disco is buy-on-sight material. They've shut the label down now but you can still pick up both the CD compilations handily enough.

Appleblim's "Applepips" label is also home to many gems, everything from Techno to Dubstep to post-Garage.

Yeah I picked up this one also on the Applepips label from Hard Wax during the week (awaiting the delivery!), mentioned it too in the recent electro thread... I fkcing love this! Yeah, I wasn't really a fan of that "Miles From Home" album I must say, and he fell off even harder after that IMO.

Most of the stuff he did before 97-ish was on a whole other level though, some incredible productions... He got hit by the FAIL-stick every bit as hard as all the other heads of his generation did though, which was a shame.

    Here's some favourites:

^ yeah, not as bad as I remember that album being I must say, and that tune sure did get caned back in the day, remember hearing it on an old Shy FX mix off some canadian radio station in Toronto and the MC's just going nuts for it!

If you like jazzy tunes this one is the daddy though:

Yeah I looked up that 'Miles from Home' album last night and the ratings were pretty poor (well, less than 4!) on discogs, they tend to be a good indication.

I did like that track though and the jazzy elements. Will have a listen to those you recommended too...

as for miles away from home, the album..wasn't great, just 2 good tunes really i'd rate...
Anyone used to listen to UK D'n'B with the MC's?.. i remeber one called Mc Det. Debt or Depth.. no sure how it was actually spellt.

    Amit - Suicide Bomber

Suicide Bomber is a great tune, it's also the only release of his I never managed to track down :(

My top 5 favourite Amit tunes (apart from "Roots")

^ Think I've played this one out more than nearly any other Amit tune; the Youtube compression doesn't do it any favours but by Christ alive it's one of the most pounding and generally filthy dirty grooves I own on vinyl.

^ Again with the Youtube compression - this is Amit in his steppy ethnic mode. He's a Sikh from the UK and lots of his song titles are references to India, hence "Motherland", "Village folk", "Swastika", "Reclaim The Symbol" etc etc.

^ Hearing Rohan playing this ages before it was released at the Metropolitan is still one of my favourite memories of the place.

^ His half-time tunes are better than his steppy efforts IMO, but I absolutely battered this when it first came out - it was always all about doing a long gradual mix with it coming in slowly over a big stripped down bassy roller and just teasig that melody in, lining the records up so they'd both break down and kick back in simultaneously and then eq-switching the basslines around... So much bass on this one that you get that weird Youtube ducking-and-pumping thing going on, unfortunately.

Aagh, so much for a top 5, there's bugger all of his tunes on Youtube and there ought to be loads more of them :(

For the record (no pun intended) "Soundwarrior", "Immigrants", "The Tube", Changing Lanes" and "Immortal" are all well worth checking.

Nearly all of Amit's back catalogue is for sale exclusively on Abunchofcuts.com - an MP3 shop set up by what were the very finest record labels in DnB at the time - Exit, Bassbin, 31, Soul:R, Signature and Bassbin; most of them only sell through there.

Ha, picked the vinyl version of that album up the other day, had the CD years and years ago, it's better than I remember it being I must say.

Drum & Bass mc-ing is very much a live thing though, tunes that have an MC recorded onto them for release tend to be a little poor...

^ Can't stand the crew he hangs around with or the tunes he always ends up chatting over, but of all the current up and coming crop of jump-up MC's and London pirate radio heads Harry Shotta has undeniable skills...

MC-wise the heads I'd rate the most would be 2Shy, SP:MC, System, Stapleton, DRS, K-Eye, Goldenchild and Deepers though.
