Not sure if this is the right place for this?

Is it possible to rig up very cheaply something that looks like CCTV?

We came home today to find one of our dogs has wrecked the porch; the only reason that makes sense is that someone has been snooping around and she was trying to see them off.

That is of course her job; but she was very distressed indeed.

We live way out in the country and have a locked gate clearly marked PRIVATE.

And a beware of the dog sign too.

Seems it is not enough to deter folk. We were out in the car so clearly it seemed we were out

Argos used to do decoy CCTV cameras with a flashing LED. Don't know if they still do. They look OK from a distance, but very fake close up.

I have perfectly well behaved dogs- who can play hell when there's no-one around. They do provide an element of security to a property- certainly- but why would you automatically assume that just because the dog has wrecked the porch that there was someone around annoying them? If the dog was left alone tied up to the porch- any wildlife wandering in the area is as likely to have upset them- and indeed far more likely to upset them, than would a stranger.

You can get all manner of dummy CCTV setups- most DIY chains have a few different ones in stock. I'm just not really sure what you hope to achieve with this.

As this query is not relevant to the Accommodation and Property forum- I'm closing this thread.

Our dogs are never, ever tied up. The very idea disgusts us. The porch is a sunporch, enclosed and thus housing the locked front and indeed the only door.

We know her and clearly someone has been snooping here and we need that to stop.

She would not freak like that at passing wild life - period.

We are very private people indeed and have a right to that privacy and peace.

And to know that folk are not snooping here when we are out.

Collie is our guard dog. Well accommodated in the porch to deter actual entry. She was deeply upset for hours; it seems she was taunted through the windows.

This has never happened before in all our time here so clearly something bad has gone on.

So hopefully a fake camera and a sign will stop that.

So thank you for what advice you reluctantly gave. We will be North this week to will be in Argos then; or will fix something up similar here. Burglary is one step away and local Gardai have given our warnings to householders to take care as there has been a spate of these recently especially in isolated rural areas.

    Moved from Accommodation & Property.

While cost is an issue, I think if you fear burglary, an alarm and/or a real camera would be better than a fake. As you seem to have a computer, you could rig up a web cam in the porch.

You can buy real CCTV enclosures with no camera inside. The enclosure looks real because it is. Small dome enclosures start at about €10. Years ago I installed a CCTV system with about 20 enclosures and only 5 of them had cameras in them.
